Celeste's Story

Life After highschool I went to SFSU and graduated with a BA in Painting and Drawing in 1970. Not wanting to be a starving artist, I returned to school and got a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology then went to work for PG&E where I worked for fourteen years, progressing through nine positions. The last position was Support Services Manager in the Napa-Vallejo Division. While working fulltime and raising two teenage boys as a single mom I got my MBA. Then got married and became the Operations Manager at SFMOMA until my husband took a job in Atlanta and I left as the trailing spouse for the "Southeast Experience". For 4 years I lived in the suburbs of Atlanta, anxious to return to my homeland of California, and then returned to the San Francisco Bay Area transformed into a computer geek. In the Bay Area, for the next fifteen years I worked as a Director of Professional Services and Technical Support for several software companies. That was an up and down wild rollercoaster ride as the dot-com bust, 9-11, and recessions took their toll on the high tech industry resulting in reorganizations and layoffs. I survived some layoffs and was impacted by others. The latest layoff ocurred in February 2009 just before my 62nd birthday. Well, doing a job search in a recession (hey, be honest it is a depression)at this age is not fun! Fortunately, during the period where I was working as a director of technical services in the software industry, I also became involved in dog agility training and started teaching dog agility classes part time at the local Humane Society. While I am unemployed in my true income-producing technical profession, I am still teaching dog agility training classes at the Humane Society part time. It doesn't produce much income, but is fun and coupled with the unemployment insurance and social security we are surviving and hoping that our lifelong 401K funds return to something close to their former state so that we can actually retire one day. My husband is building out an area of our house for my art studio - a place where I can be creative...and messy. So, I hope to resume my painting and photography work which I've set aside for many decades as I supported my family. Maybe one day I will be a rich and famous artist (RFA). Then my business cards can include the following letters - BA, MBA, CNE, and RFA. I am married, have two grown sons (very handsome!), four adorable grandsons, and one step-grand daughter. her, nice neighborhoods, proximity to San Francisco, outdoor activities, and hiking the many trails of Mt. Tamalpais where my husband is a park ranger. In spite of career changes, moves, layoffs, and watching our life savings disappear in the last year with the economic downturn, life has been good - a challenging adventure at times - but good nonetheless. Please write and tell me about you!! School Highschool was a long time ago. I remember getting good grades, enjoying art and choir, and Girls Athletic Association activities after school. I also remember having a group of close girlfriends at the first highschool I went to - San Leandro High - and have still maintained some of those friendships. Those girlfriends are now part of my "chosen family" and are sisters who have shared life with me since I was fourteen. At Amador I felt like I was an outsider stopping by on my way to college since I arrived in the middle of my Junior year. It has been fun to reconnect with these highschool classmates in the last few years and become friends as adults. I love seeing them and learning about them at our reunions. I know that some people think their highschool years were the best years of their lives, but I don't. I was anxious to grow up and face "real life". In my mind, highschool and all of my childhood was always the preparation for "real life". And I have to say that life post-highschool has been far more interesting! College I worked my way through college with several part time jobs, and shared houses and apartments with roomates in the Sunset District of San Francisco while attending SFSU. It was an exciting time of life with so many dreams ahead of me and such a desire to become something important and contribute to the world. I was extremely idealistic and determined. That is truly a sign of youth! I returned to college two more times, each time earning and paying my own way without financial aid from parents or others. Once I returned to get my technical degree and again I returned to get my MBA. Both times I was an adult with children and a full time job. So those additional degrees were earned as part time evening and weekend tasks after the full time work and childraising and housecleaning were done. Everyone has said I am excellent at time management and I'm very motivated and determined once I make a decision to accomplish something. I guess that is what it takes to do what I have done. Workplace My work biography is listed on LinkedIn and in Who's Who of America.
