Charlene's Story
Well, my story! After graduation I worked at J.L. Hudson, was there from high school. Then worked as a aid at a Birmingham School that used team teaching. That was interesting but, just not my bag. Married a wonderful man in 1966, still married, so will be celebrating my 50th in 2016! He was drafted into the army and was sent to Vietnam, I got a job at Oakland County Courthouse, in the Mental Health Division of Probate Court. Spent 3 wonderful years there. Many stories!!! When Ken returned home we built a house in Walled Lake, then had 1 son. I was in deep with our son Dan's school as P.T.O. president. Hubby Ken went back to work at the Dearborn Rouge Plant and trained to become a Journeyman Electician, (which he did) worked there for 44 years, retired in 2008. In between times I went to beauty school in Brighton to become a Nail Technician. I worked for a couple of salons in Walled Lake, and then worked out of our home. I also worked out of the Seniors Complex called the Walled Lake Villa. Ken's mother was living near by, but wanted to live at the Villa A...Expand for more
partments. I was able to help get her an apartment, and still did nails there. The Villa had an Activities Director and allowed me to use her office for this work. I have always been involved with crafts of all things, (never find a craft I didn't like!) Anyhow, the Activities Director asked me many times to help her out doing crafts with the residents at the Villa, which I gladly did. She became ill, and the building manager asked me if I wanted her job! He said that since I was doing all of her work anyhow, I might just as well get paid for it! What a perfect job, did crafts with wonderful seniors, took them on trips (that were paid for + got my pay!) Since I didn't feel needed at home this job gave me validation! I just loved it! When the company downsized, they decided that I was no longer needed, so I packed up my toys and went home. After Ken's retirement I found the RED HAT SOCIETY! What a super thing! I get to wear awful get-ups, big hats, laugh, have wonderful girlfriends, to have fun with! I couldn't be happier! My life has been wonderful!!
