Charlene's Story
College
I went back to school after finishing nursing school and studied at both St. Pete Jr. College and St. Leo University for a degree in Psychology. I did not enjoy this endeavor but have used it my entire career. In fact, I scored the highest on my achievement tests in Psychology but never wanted to pursue in life. Riverside White Cross School of Nursing gave me the best education I could have ever hoped for then and now.
I did get a couple of scholarships which helped but most of my education came on blood sweat and tears. Dang---that's what life is all about!!!!!
Workplace
Actually, I began working at the age of 14 when I worked with the American Red Cross in Columbus. After I graduated, in 1964, I worked in Industrial Nursing in Cleveland, OH then went over seas for 3 years where my children we...Expand for more
re born. I came back to Columbus and worked for the Columbus Cancer Clinic and appeared on TV and news print. After that, I worked in Pediatrics in Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville and made my way to Atlanta. There I studied with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and was an Infection Control Nurse for about 10 years setting up programs in hospitals in Indiana and Georgia and Florida. I became a Director of Nurses for about 7 years with Long Term Care and finally worked as a Home Health Nurse with Morton Plant Hospital for almost 10 years before retiring and working for a private physician two years before I retired. Now, I just "play" around and look after my hubby who has lung cancer--which is a full time job. You can take the nurse out of the chaos but cannot take the chaos out of the nurse.
