Charlene's Story

Life After high school, I had a number of jobs. I worked as a nurses' aide, unit secretary, and medical records clerk. I went to Calvin for 1 1/2 years before dropping out to work full time. I married and had 3 wonderful children: Bob,28; Tracie,26; and Stevie, 24. Our daughter married a wonderful man, Brian, and blessed us in 2001 with a darling granddaughter, and 2 wonderful grandsons in 2003 and 2005. I returned to school and got a degree in Health Information and I now help with software implementations for a computer company. I have been given the opportunity to travel to a lot of different places in the country and to get to know a lot of different people. This has been both challenging and enjoyable. Our family has faced a number of challenges. My husband had kidney failure and was on dialysis for 2-3 years before receiving a kidney transplant. We then discovered that the disease that caused his kidneys to fail was familial amyloidosis, and the only treatment was a liver transplant which he received in September, 2001. He has been sick and in the hospital many time since then, which has been a lot to deal with. We have found the difference that a hospital makes. At St. Mary's in Grand Rapids, the nurses were more responsive and the physical therapists listened to Bob and tailored their treatment to what would work for him. At University Hospital in Ann Arbor, the nurses on the transplant floor were too busy, and the average wait time for any response was 30 minutes--even when the...Expand for more
matter was urgent. The therapists idea of therapy was, "get up and walk...oh--you need to have some muscle stretching first so the pain will be less? Goodbye." There were teams of physicians, residents and medical students who made decisions without bothering to find out what other teams were doing. As a result, the care was disjointed, and contributed to Bob's many additional stays in the hospital, and his de-conditioning. When he went in for his transplant, he could walk with a cane and walker. Now, he can make it 15-20 feet once a day with a walker, and it tooks months of therapy in a rehab center and PT at home to get him to this point. He had a second surgery 2 years after the liver transplant, and since then has pretty much given up on walking. The best part is that he is not in pain. He used to have a morphine patch, and 2 other pain meds and was still in pain. Now he takes Vicodin once in awhile when it gets bad--otherwise he doesn't feel the pain is bad enough to take medicine. That is such a wonderful thing. Our youngest son had meningitis when he was 11 months old, and the resulting brain damage has left him with the mentality of a 4 month old. He is very sweet and is able to laugh and be joyful. Other than that, we have been very fortunate. God has blessed us with a wonderful church family at Community CRC and they have been very supportive over the years. Our extended families have helped us through as well. It will be interesting to see what the next years will bring.
