Charles's Story

Hello Everyone: I actually lived long enough to retire, sometimes (especially in Nam) I wondered if I would make it. Anyway, I think I've lived the complete American life style for a bio. Graduated from Kearny 1963, then a couple of years of college, U.S. Army 1965 to 1969, Worked at Thrifty Drug Stores (from management trainee all the way to Manager) 1969 to 1981. Married 1975, beautiful daughter born 1979, divorced 1980. Moved to Texas in 1982 (Houston)and finished my degree (B.S. Computer Science) at the Universtiy of Houston(1984) while working as a computer operator for First City Bank. Worked as a systems engineer for EDS then Continental Airlines; retired 2001 and after a year got bored (bummer). So I'm now back at the University of Houston as a graduate student. A couple of more years of this and I'll try my hand at teaching. Update: June 07, 2009 - Original entry was sometime in 2004/2005; definitely time for an update. I finished my second college stint (this time in humanities), and picked up a teaching certificate for Social Studies. I guess I finally became an "over achiever" in my old age. Rather than settle for a certificate for one area. i.e. History or Geograhy etc, I earned the complex teaching certificate in Social Studies and passed the state exam qualifying to teach any/all of the Social Studies subjects. I started teaching World History in Pearland, Texas (Houston area) 2006/2007 school year. Then I transferred to Texas City High School for the Fall 2007 term (Galveston area) and I am still there. So far while at Texas City High School, I have taught Economics/Goverenment, U.S. History, and Geography. I have been back to San Diego to visit family and friends a couple of times in the last few years. It is amazing how much things look the same and yet different at the same time. Linda Vista still has most of the old houses but they are rapidly being given remodels/updated new looks. The Linda Vista shopping center is just about unr...Expand for more
ecgonizable except for the old Roy's/Alpha Beta/Gardening Center which is now a roller skating rink (or was a couple of years ago when I was last there. I updated my email with Classmates so people should actually be able to reach me now. (I realized I had not updated my email on classmates in about 3 or 4 years - and comcast took over my old provider during that time) Everyone Take care and email me if you get the chance. September 15, 2014: It has been awhile since the last update and life goes on, I was in San Diego last month for my daughter's funeral. She had only been married for about 2 years and was as happy as I always wanted her to be. She was always the independent type and floored us all when she married a Marine; I guess there is something about a man in uniform. I looked around a bit while I was there and there is a mixture of the old (1963) and new (2014). Many of the houses in Linda Vista have been remodeled or replaced but many of the old are still there. The old Alpha Beta building still stands and still a roller skating rink. Kearny has had some additions and the parking lot has been upgraded to the 21rst century but the school is still pretty much the same (at least from the outside). The armory is still there; I hope they still have the Friday after game dances. I am still teaching, but since I turn 70 in February, I have decided it is time to try retirement again. So in June 2015, I will retire from teaching high school (just in time for our high school reunion). If I get bored again, it will be back to school to work on a PHD in history (what a great excuse to rent a Villa on an island in the Adriatic to do research). Doctor Chuck does have a nice sound to it. I will only be nearing 80 by that time. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion, identifying people after 50 years should be a fun challenge. With luck, one of life's surprises will not keep me from the reunion - missed the one in 2013, so crossing my fingers.
