Charles's Story

First let me tell all of those who may visit my story...I want to say that I had no real intention of joining this site. That is until I saw the names of my fellow classmates. I must say that seeing so many names was an incredible rush. It was at that moment that I decided to join this site with the chance to maybe re-connect with some of my fellow classmates or to at least take a peek and see what many of you all have been up to since graduating from Ballou. Go Knights! Here's an update on what I have been doing for the past 23 years since graduation. Has it really been that long - 23 years? After graduation I attended Lincoln Tech Automotive School. I got very sick while attending school. Left the school after deciding that turning wrenches wasn't what I really wanted to do. I then began working at Marlo Furniture in Forestville, MD. I worked there for several months learning how to drive and operate the lifts used throughout the warehouse. Myself and a co-worker were responsible for filling customer orders. This required us to have to take a lift into the warehouse, locate the items that matched the customers order, wrestle it onto the lift, and return it to the customer pick-up area, and then load it into their truck or car. Before you get good at operating the lift, you must go through that awkward learning stage better known as crashing into a lot of stuff. I did my fair share of crashing but I never hit any customers. Okay okay I'll admit I came close to hitting some customers. Is it my fault that Marlo at that time allowed its customers to walk through a porton of the warehouse? Well I moved on from Marlo and began working at Pearle Vision Center at Hechinger Mall in northeast D.C. I wokred there for a total of 9-months. This was only because I had already applied for a job with a Federal Government Agency (that shall remain nameless). I have been wth this agency now for 21 years. I have h...Expand for more
ad many jobs with this agency...security escort, back-up security receptionist, back-up chauffer (sp), mail-room guy, courier, office point-of-contact. I currently manage a team of 11 people that is made up of staff (government employees) and contractors. In this position I am required to not only manage the day-to-day functions of my team but I am also required to brief junior grade officers and senior management level officers in one-on-one briefings or as a large group. I even thought about driving tractor-trailers professionally. I began the training completing half of the training program before withdrawing after deciding that I liked being home more than being on the road. I enjoyed the experience of driving a tractor-trailer while training - yes out on real roads with other vehicles. The instructors had us out on the road driving the tractor-trailer on our 3rd day of class! The desire to drive tractor-trailers for a living is still alive in me. Maybe I'll revisit this occupation in the future. I have had the opportunity to travel for pleasure and business. Pleasure trips - 6 different cruises - Hawaii (4 islands), Tahiti, Bora Bora, Aruba, The Cayman Islands, Acapulco, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas. Please trip - 1 week stays in Las Vegas; Atlanta; and Dearborn, Michigan. Business trips - Miami; Seattle; New Jersey; Sacramento, CA; Brussels and Antwerp, Belgium; Lima, Peru; Mexico City; El Salvador; upcoming trip will be to Bangkok, Thailand; and possibly later this year - trips to Croughton, England and Frankfurt, Germany. I am not married but I do have a wonderful lady in my life. We have traveled togther to the locations listed above under the pleasure trips. I collect Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Johnny Lightning cars, etc. I am also a Hot Wheels club member and have attended 3 annual Hot Wheels conventions held in different cities throughout the U.S.
