Charles's Story
Life
Finally retired after 21 years 6 months and 10 days in the US Army. We bought a house in Fort Worth. I've had more opportunities to see my daughter, Amber, and grandson, Rafe, in the last year than I did the previous 21+. He is quite a handsome boy and bundle of energy. He will be 3 on 15 Dec this year, 2009.
School
The "Then" photo is one of our 5th grade class at Freeman Elementary. Can you pick out who is there? Blake Pippen, Steve Womack, Craig Corbell, Peggy Paul, Melissa Robertson, Kay Parker, Scott Beavers,Steve Stack, Ronnie Teer, Rodney Roberson, Russel Critendon, Keith Plaisance, Ronald Beaty, Connie Bear, Maria Evans, James Baker, Donna Reed, Cathy Montgomery, ... Let me know who I forgot. I don't seem to be in this one.
Military
I joined in 1986 at the ripe ole age of 29 to support my family and serve my country. Basic training was in Alabama and my specialty training, AIT, was at Ft Sam Houston in San Antonio. I was a medic in the Army. From there I went to Ft Hood in Killeen, TX and was in 2 units there before I was sent to Panama for 16 months. Then back to Ft Hood for 5 years. It seemed that when I left a unit they later went to war and the units I arrived at had just gotten back from one. ...Expand for more
That has happened throughout my career. In 1995 I went from Ft Hood to Hawaii for 3 years. I made the all Army Hawaii bowling team but also suffered 2 herniated disks in my lower back. It was a little painful, hmmm. After Hawaii I went to Fort Carson in Colorado. The temperature change was quite extreme. I learned to like snow, we don't have much of that in Houston. 42 months and 3 units in CO and back to TX. I then was an OC/T - observer controller trainer in Grand Prairie. I traveled quite a bit to various posts and trained reserve units who were soon to go overseas. I was setting up ambushes as they traveled through various routes in a convoy. Hopefully they learned how to react to us and survive the real bullets over yonder. Another move, this time to Korea has come and gone and then to Ft Sam Houston in San Antonio. We shuttled wounded warriors and their family members all around Ft Sam and the surrounding area. I retired on 31 July 2007 and settled down and set up a permanent residence in Fort Worth with the love of my life, Deborah. I have 5 acres of land near Ft Hood but it just gets too hot there in the summer. We play TX Holdem and host and play at small 2 to 4 table tournaments a few times a month.
