Charles's Story

After graduating from CAC, I got my AAS from Mohawk Valley Community College in Electrical Technology. With that finished, I went to work for National Cash Register in Ithaca, for a very few months before being drafted in the army. I did my basic training in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. Then, it was on to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma for advanced training as an artillery surveyor. Next, it was Ft. Bragg, North Carolina where I was assigned to the 5th Battalion 42nd Artillery. The battalion was in the early stages of preparing for redeployment to Viet Nam. At that time, they needed people to work in the personnel department to help process new people into the organization. I was offered the position, and took it. By the time they were ready to depart, I only had 9 months left on my two year commitment, and the personnel department was over head count. Three of us had to be left behind. I was reassigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery where I finished my military career. On returning to civilian life in October 1968, I rejoined National Cash Register where I stayed until March of 1970. Near the end of my military career, I took some leave to be the best man and my college room mate's wedding. His bride asked her college room mate to be the maid of honor. When I returned to military life, I wrote to her, frequently. While working at National Cash, I drove to Rochester most weekends to visit her. In November 1969, I asked her to marry me, and she agreed. Back at work, I asked my management to allow me to take some time each week to attend Cornell to finish my degree in Electrical Engineering. They refused, so with a wedding in the near future, and not seeing a great future at NCR, I started applying to companies in the Rochester area. My work experience at NCR was in microelectronics design, and Xerox in Rochester was looking for someone with this kind of experience. In March of 1970, I left NCR and joined Xerox designing test procedures for microelectronics and other electronic and electrical devices. In August of that year, we were married. The following year, I returned to school in an evening program at Rochester Institute of Technology. It was difficult for both of us because I was away from home so much while attending classes, and when I was home, I was in the books. In 1972, our first son was born, and three years later a second son was born. Three years after that, I finally graduated from RIT with honors, with a BSEE degree. h school, and decided he wanted to be a pharmacist. Since his graduation from SUNY Buffalo, he's been a pharmacist at a number of local retailers. He was offered a position as a regional manager by two of his employers, and after working in that position for a few months each time, decided that the extra time he was away from home wasn't worth the extra pay, and returned to the pharmacy. In 1999, while attending a new employee's seminar, he met another new employee, a charming young lady that he eventually married in 2001, just days after the 9/11 attack. Mean while, number 2 son also graduated from high school and decided to become an engineer. He went to Alfred University and earned a BSEE with high honors. While visiting with a friend from work, the friend's wife, a nurse, invited a single co-worker from one of the local hospitals to join them for dinner. The two singles hit it off immediately, and were married in 2004. In 2008, they were blessed with a daughter who has been a delight to all of us. We spend a lot of time with our sons and their families and enjoy every minute of it. Number 2 son and his wife have a 5th wheel camper. My wife and I have a class A motor home. We spend almost every weekend with them all summer at a local campground. Number 1 son and his wife visit us at the campground when their schedules allow it. They have a new house on 8 acres in a nearby town and like to entertain, so we spend most holidays at their house with their extended family. These are indeed big events. In 2006, we all went of a Caribbean cruise. It was the first one for my sons, and about the 7th or 8th for my wife and me. We just came back from another one from May 10th through May 18th, 2009. Although my sons and families weren't able to go, we were accompanied by a couple that we often camp with. I'm now approaching retirement. I've been at Xerox for over 39 years, and expect to be there for about 2 more years. My wife is the town clerk, and also expects to retire in about 2 years. After that, we want to do some more traveling while we still can. We're both in pretty good health. My wife is slightly diabetic, but with exercise and with some care in her diet, it's under control without the use of drugs. I have no medical problems. I've been a regular runner for 27 years. I still run 5 miles each work day and some vacation days, although I've slowed down a bit over the last few years. We both enjoy our work, but look forward to having more freedom to come and go as we please.
