Charles's Story
Life
Hello friends,former classmates and students! I attended Alderson-Broaddus College in WV for two years studying chemistry and math and then moved to Indiana where I worked as a research lab tech at Great Lakes Chemical Corp. in W. Lafayette. After responding to a call to full-time Christian ministry I returned to WV and finished my BA in Christian Education and Church Leadership at WV Wesleyan. I then became pastor of two Methodist churches in southeast Ohio while attending seminary and then, a few years later, Colonial UM church in Anderson, Indiana. My wife Debbie (from Indianapolis) and I now live in Carmel, IN and have five children: Rebekah-23, Jeremy-22, Suzanna-20, Jordan-18, and Bethany-14. I taught computer skills at Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis for five years and completed my MA in Ministry Leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University. I am presently a stay-at-home dad doing my best to help raise our younest daughter while Debbie focuses on alternative health rememdies for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
School
I have very much enjoyed the schools I have attended and thank every teacher I've ever had for their positive influence on my life. I am also thankful for each and every friend I've met along the way. I only regret that I have not done more to stay in touch. College
Let's see, AB College was quite the social learning arena for me. From great roommates to a special girlfriend to a wonderful Christian brother from Puerto Rico as well as professors and resident hall directors I was blessed and tested in life's many challenges. WV Wesleyan was my adult learning center. Thanks to a pastor who took personal interest in mentoring me I went back to college as a married adult with children and completed my bachelor's degree!
I have also now completed a master of arts degree in ministry leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Workplace
I'll never forget my first job: cutting gas line right-of-way with a scythe up and down the wooded hills of WV, tying to keep up with the veterans while avoiding yellow jacket nests and copper head snakes. For that we were paid minimum wage! On the other end of the spectrum, my first college-related job was working in a research lab developing flame retardants just a few miles from Purdue University. One of my other favorite summer jobs was counseling children of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. employees at Camp Thomas E. Lightfoot in Hinton, WV. Great times in the great outdoors along the Greenbriar River! What great preparation for my next ministry assignment of full-time teaching in the classroom! I've come to learn that relationships with others are far more important than any knowledge one gains or product they produce.
Military
The closest I have ever came to serving in the military was a week long youth leadership camp sponsored by the West Virginia National Guard at Camp Dawson near Kingwood, WV.
