Charles's Story

Life I retired from teaching at the end of the 2006 season, and now have so much stuff to do that I wonder how I had time for work before I retired; writing my “bio” for classmates.com was not on my list. My cat died of heart failure, and two months later his arch-enemy, Dr. Nick, the veterinarian, also died of heart failure; poetic justice. When not spending Suzi’'s (my wife’s) money (she invested well) on pills, we travel to wherever we want and stay as long as we want. If we don’'t get sick from the food and/or the water, I don’'t consider it an adventure. I don'’t ride a motorcycle, but Suzi does; I don'’t even have a helmet. I have a weekly radio show where I play rock and roll music from the 50s & 60s, and know what the 45 rpm label looks like for the biggest hit for the group “The Mermaids”, along with a lot of other “moldy oldie” trivia. I bought a book some years ago and taught myself how to juggle, but it’'s been so long I can’'t juggle anymore (or find the book). At one time I could solve the Rubik's Cube without having read a book on how to solve the Rubik’s cube. With a little brushing up I can say “hello” in ten languages, including English, and “Where is the toilet?” in eight. I know how to ride the public buses in Hangzhou, China, and go anyplace in the city I want. I have lived so long that I have rebuilt my wooden back porch steps three times after they have rotted, all by myself. I can faux-paint marble with either my left or my right hand; it does not matter. I still can'’t whistle, but it does not bother me anymore. I hate people who drive SUVs, vans, or pickup trucks, even though I don’t personally know them; I’'m old, and it’s my right. I don’'t own a cell phone, but still think that I should get one. I have so many tools, spare parts, and pieces of plastic and metal in my garage and basement that I can fix most anything in my house without having to make more than one trip to the home building supply store. I like shopping at the Walmart. A few weeks ago while walking a young man complimented me on...Expand for more
my hat. I snorkel, but don'’t scuba. I brush, but don’'t floss. I have discovered that much of what my mother told me was wrong; I now regularly go out in the rain without a coat, and have not caught my “death-by-cold”; I can run with my shoe laces untied, and have yet to “fall and break my leg." After 63 years I still don'’t get along well with my sister. I have published articles in "Sky & Telescope Magazine" (two), the "Journal of the Astro Space Stamp Society", the "Proceedings of the Colonial Shore Bird Society", the "Journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers", and the "American Journal of Physics", to name a few. I don'’t play hand ball anymore--—never did. I own several Hohner 1896/20 Marine Band Harmonicas, the finest blues harmonicas in the universe. I regularly cook with Sriracha Thai chili sauce, and often use three hot sauces in the same dish. My neighbors consult me on color selection for their home decorating projects, and I own my own color chip book; I still prefer oil base paints and love bright colors. I have seen the canals on Mars, and the Great Red Spot on Jupiter. I can no longer hear in my right ear. I have my own web site, and a page on Facebook, and am fluent in JAVA. (not Javascript). I hate Bill Gates for what he has done to computer software, and curse him and his family from this generation to the next to the end of time. I watch Cops on TV at least once a day; "Bad boy, bad boy, whatcha' gonna do?" "Get on the ground." But my favorite show is South Park; I ate lunch in South Park and have driven across Wolf Creek Pass. I own about a dozen oriental rugs, mostly small. I have a cardiologist who speaks Chinese. There are lots of other things that I can tell you about myself, and perhaps one day will. I only have 98 characters left in this space and am going to stop . . . School I finished. College I have spent most of my life in colleges and universities. Workplace I'm retired, only work at what I want to. Military I avoided having to go to Viet Nam but admire and respect those who did.
