Charles's Story

Well, I worked full time and went to RIC on the long term plan. When I graduated I taught English in London and around New England for a few years. During my professional life always held two jobs. The second job working in one capacity or other became a passion and for most of my life worked in rehabilitation for both youthful and adult offenders. I very quietly have had several short stories published, but never really talk about them. I have a BA in Educaation and Communications. I have a BS from someplace in CT in Psych and Soc. As well as working criminal justice on the inside I was an Auxillery Police Officer on the outside. I was the first openly gay criminal justice professionl in RI and paid a heavy price for it. My partner and I have had several foster kids over the years. I have been with my present partner for about 25 years. I like my house, boat, and RV just the way they are. I presently am living with my partner, my adopted son who is now 20 and his girlfriend. The family has 2 dogs and I have a service dog of my own. I have been deaf for the last 15 years. The greatest joy in the morning is putting in my hearing aids; my greatest joy at night is taking them out again. How people remember me? Couldn't care less. What people didn't know about me? Maybe that my Dad abused me badly all my life. My favorite memory of HS? getting razzed at basketball games and Dick Nixon's Cigars. Job I hated most, teaching. Jobs I liked the best, anything that put me in high risk situations. Thing I am most grateful for, I never had to fire my gun in 30 years of carrying one. Thecher I miss the most, John Hague; he gave me self comfidence. I always wanted to be a Public Servant when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have Hearing Aids, Cell phone, and Fenway my service dog to be able to deal with the day-t...Expand for more
o-day. If I won $100 million, I'd give 98 of it to my broker and trust officer, then spend the rest on winter home in FL, second boat and my radio club's repeater. My best friend would tell you I'm very private, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as out going. Small talk is easy when I can talk at all. Oh yeah, my biggest surprise was when I woke up about 6 years ago fully mobile but unable to speak and very confused. Learning to talk and then getting involved with a ham radio club who patiently got me relaxed enough that I can talk most of the time without stuttering like "Billy Bibbitt". I've been permently totally disabled for tha last 5 years. I do some volunteer work at the yacht club, actually chair a committee, and am a Ham Radio Opperater (K1CEL). I fish, follow the Sox rabidly, camp, hike, and am with my dog 24/7. The cool thing about a Boston for a service dog is when he isn't carrying me, I can carry him. Regrets-few if any not being able to spell as well as I could or do much math or arithmatic. Plans-still adjusting to the present. Dreams-nah have to take meds to stop the nightmares. Accomplishments-a few I guess. I will have to wait and see what they put in my obit. Awards-all in a drawer somewhere. Rewards-hearing "great job" for doing something ordinary, Joy-Seeing all our "kids" safe, educated, and happy and hearing from them once and a while. First giving them roots, then wings. Sorrow-realizing that when Scott & Amber move out in a few months that our "parenting" days are over. 60 is too old for me to make a home for another angry teenager. Faith-Strong and Silent as a Quaker Meeting often is. Hope-that in spite of the cost to me for doing what was right for me others' lives have been as full. OK thats about it, I guess. If I write an inch or two more my agent will be expecting a check. Best wishes to all who have waded through this drivel to this point. Chuck
