Charles's Story

This has been a long time coming but if your stuck with snow in 2019, you have time! Shortly after graduation, I enlisted into the Air Force and spent 4 years, 2 of them overseas. It definitely was an experience. I decided to pursue a college education and initially went to County College of Morris. Later in the process a teacher mentioned the possibilities of becoming a Physician Assistant. Medicine was not an area that I Knew much about so I applied for a job at Morristown Memorial Hospital as an orderly. Things continued and was confident that this was my area of choice. I applied to Rutgers University and completed the Physician Assistant program course. I would then proceed to a PA surgical residency in Baltimore and a few years later obtain my masters degree, MS at St Francis of Loretto College in Pennsylvania. During that time, I was offered a position at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA and worked on the Cardiothoracic and Vascular service and later participated in the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Service. I would stay at Geisinger for 35 years, retiring December, 2016. During my time in Danville, I had wonderful experiences. I also had some "shocking" experiences! One spring afternoon in the town of Danville, they had a Spring Festival on the town street. I met a group of Nuns who were selling bake goods and they looked very familiar. I told one Sister that they looked like the Sisters who taught me at MCHS in Denville. She said yes! And I was speechless and came to find out that their rehabilitation Convent was in Danville. A short time time later I went for a visit to see the Convent and went to their morning Mass. I met that same Sister who then told me that one of the Sisters there was a MCHS graduate. In my mind, I said what could be the chances.....not close! Well, as I was talking to this Sister she told me to turn around and who came up to me was Sister Margaret Ann ( Patricia) Guiton. Big hug! I was shocked. She and I would then get a chance to talk on occasions. I would come to meet a few of my teachers ...Expand for more
as well.....the most " famous" was Sister Helen Joseph, who was my Latin teacher. I have stories on that but they would take too long to tell. There was a Sister Rene, Sister Johanette but passed away before I knew about them. There was also Sister Franceline who had a name change to Sister Helen Marie, who was my chemistry teacher. She was doing well. Lastly, On acouple of occasions that I was there I had the opportunity of seeing the SCC Provincial as she visited the Sisters. It was Sister Mary Edward. I never had the opportunity to have a class with her but did on occasion see her walking in the classroom playing her guitar ! I did not let her forget that each time we talked and laughed. Well the sad part for me was this. There was a new Convent being built in Mendham and in early 2018 all the Sisters were transferred to that facility. I miss them all but appreciate the opportunity to reunite with them in this life. I hope to come and visit them soon......if we can keep the snow and ice away! Update 02/19/22. Well I retired from Geisinger Medical Center at the end of 2017. It only took about 4 months before going crazy figuring out what to do. I asked a prior retired Physician assistant what he was doing and he said, I substitute teach in schools that have some students with autism or other disabilities. I thought about it, but questioned my teaching skills. Then I asked the wife of a doctor who I knew, what she suggested and she said to substitute teach. Well, I guess this was not accidental but maybe a God direction for me. So I proceeded with entry into this new "teaching profession" and have been doing this for the last 5 years. My son's high school where he graduated from in Bloomsburg, PA, asked me within my first year of substitute teaching if I could take an assistant cross country coach position which led next to asking me if I could substitute teach and then later asked if I would also be the assistant Track and Field coach. I keep saying wow, wow. I thought I had retired 😮 Haha. I must say it keeps me in motion!
