Charles's Story
I was born at a very young age in Kentucky. Although my ancestry does not reflect it, I am certain that I have gypsy blood in my veins.
I joined the army when I was 17. A trip back home when I was 19 made me realize that I would not be able to return and live there again, since there was too much of this world to see in one lifetime. I stayed in the Army for 20 years. I recall that at the age of 20, after having been in Hawaii for three years, I volunteered for another overseas tour, rather than being assigned somewhere near "home." I received orders for Turkey. After getting off the troop ship in California, I could have purchased an airline ticket for $98 to fly to New York and on to Istanbul. Instead I paid $100 for a bus ticket, traveling coast to coast. My gypsy blood was telling me what to do!

1968 I married my wife, Renee in Frankfurt, Germany. When I retired from the Army in 1981, we had bought our first house in New Mexico. I finished my MBA there and started to work for the civil service. In 1989 I finally was able to get an assignment in Germany and we lived there until 2000. My next assignment was at the Pentagon where I worked for three years. Yes, I remember 9/11. If it had not been for a contractor's failure to complete his job on time, I would have been sitting right where the plane hit.
In early 2003, Renee suggested that I retire. We could buy an RV and hit the road. That is what we did in 2004! We have been on the road throughout North America since then. Read our travel journal. Do a google search for rmortonc since it is not possible to post the website name in this profile.
