Charles's Story
Let's see...Charlie Passacantando & Butchie Passacantando....not brothers, one and the same. No s__t!! Grew up on York Ave, New Brighton. Arrived from the Bronx into Staten Island no later than 1950! New Brighton? Definitely there prior 1955!
PS 17 ...1st, 2nd, 3rd grade. Dad must of got a raise and Charlie was off to Stapelton, St John the Baptist de La Salle every AM for 4th, 5, 6th & 7th grade. Connections with higher ups in the Catholic church and I was off to St Paul's for the 8th grade.....Big change actually. St John the Baptist mostly Democrats....or if they weren't, they should of been. Not a lot of money in Stapelton! Now in St Paul's...kids whose parents had more money than people who lived on York Ave.
It was 1960. My dad got a new car. He got a Buick Skylark. Kids in this school were into new cars and who had one. Seemed like a much bigger deal than it was with the Stapelton crowd. I mentioned my dad got a new...Expand for more
car and was immediately hit with the question, "What kind?".....I knew the answer, Buick Skylark! Nods of approval followed. No big deal....but I noticed.
Couple of days later my dad came by for some reason at lunch time....yeah, he drove in the new car. I was asked by my new friends, didn't you say your dad had a new car the other day? Yeah, I said, that is a new car. Looks of disapproval followed. No big deal...but I noticed.
I asked dad about this ....strange reaction at school with the car thing. He explained that in this school when kids said their family had a new car it had to be the same year model as the present calendar....if it ain't a 1960 it doesn't count as a new car even if you just bought the car yesterday. Our new car was a 1957 model.
I'm sure I learned many other things at St Paul's Grammar school. There were many future Democrats there.....but it was also loaded with future card carrying Republicans!
