Charles's Story
After graduating from Snyder High in 1963, I attended Newark College of Engineering graduating in 1967 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. I was in the ROTC at college and upon graduation was commisioned in the USAF. In June 1967, in addition to graduating and going on active duty I was married to Claire (Burns) from West Orange NJ. We had two sons - Michael & David.
I stayed in the Air Force for a 20 year career retiring in 1987. During that period I had tours of duty at Vandenberg AFB in Lompoc CA launching satellites, Air Force Institute of Technology for a master's degree in engineering, Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton OH working on elecronic jamming systems for the EF-111A aircraft, Offutt AFB in Omaha NE working on command and control sytems at Strategic Air Command headquarters, Air Command & Staff College in Montgomery AL, the Pentagon doing budget and planning for communication satellites, and Andrews AFB, MD working in the field of technical intelligence.
Upon retiring from the USAF in 1987, I resided in Bowie MD and worked for several private c...Expand for more
ompanies for the next 15 years working on air traffic control projects. During this time I lost my wife Claire to cancer in 1994.
I married Olivia and moved to Silver Spring MD in 1995. I worked part time and as a consultant for several years from 2002 - 2005. In 2005, I began working full time again at Georgetown University where I was the project manager for a federal grant developing alternative transportation systems for buses using a fuel cell and battery combination to provide an all-electric hybrid bus. The federal grant for the project ended in 2011 but I continued to work part time for the university helping to plan and implement campus infrastructure improvements for utility and energy programs. I retired in June of 2018.
In 2020, Olivia and I sold our house in Silver Spring, MD and moved to a new home in the Estuary community near Bethany Beach, DE. We also have a condo in Leisure World in Silver Spring MD and are there often since we have three children and two grandchildren still living in the DC, Northern Virginia, and Baltimore areas.
