Charles's Story

Life My life has been a series of a love affairs. My love of theatre began at 11 when I acted in a play in Carmel and the one with music began at 12. At 15, I loved designing sound at a community theatre and worked on the Monterey Jazz, Folk and Pop Festivals over the next two years. A trip to Europe and a stay in Vienna at 17 engendered a love of opera and musical theatre and travelling and I love being friends with the former technical director of the Vienna State Opera and his son, who is the resident sound engineer at the Vienna Folks Opera. I fell in love with my first professional sound design position in January 1970 at the American Conservatory Theatre after studying engineering at UC Berkeley and was resident Sound Designer at ACT for the '70 through '72 seasons. I designed sound for over 50 productions at various theatres in North America over the next few years. I fell in love with Vancouver, Canada at 19 and in love at first sight with my life partner, Marilyn Williams (Will) one month after moving there and we both fell in love with our wonderful kids, with whom we have always had super relationships and who are a couple of the greatest people in the world. Our daughter, Thea, is married to Mike Dowler, who completely coincidentally is the nephew of one of the very first people I met in Vancouver, musician Tom Northcott. Our son, Gareth is an honours history student at Concordia University in Montreal as well as a gourmet chef. Teaming up with Will also fulfilled my childhood love fantasy of being with someone like Hayley Mills ever since I shadowed her while they filmed The Parent Trap in Monterey in 1961. They really aren't that similar in appearance but they are both English and have enough similarities to trigger some quite basic responses! This revelation was made obvious after reading the bio of another Monterey High friend here (Craig Thompson) who also revealed his attraction to Hayley Mills and we both acknowledge her loomin...Expand for more
g presence in the psyche of most boys our age! I loved being the first Sound Design Commissioner, a Director and becoming a Fellow of USITT. And I loved being the owner of a major recording studio in Vancouver for 19 years. I love that the equipment and software my company produces has enhanced theatre technology around the world since 1972. In fact, the very first console Richmond Sound Design built was rented continuously for 27 years. And I love working on standards-making processes which help push industry-wide advances such as the MIDI Show Control Standard which I spearheaded under the auspices of USITT. I loved receiving awards and being listed in wikipedia, where you can find a link to my 'unexpurgated' bio on my user page. And now we really love living largely in London, England, and bicycling along the Thames and the many canals almost every day when we aren't travelling around Europe. Our flat there is right by Tower Bridge, the new City Hall and old Tower of London and is in the revitalised Docklands area. Our condo in Vancouver is right on a similarly revitalised South False Creek and has a great view of downtown and the mountains and we enjoy bicycling along a similar walkway along the shoreline and all the way around the downtown area. And the internet is my latest love because it allows me to be in beautiful and wonderful places everywhere while communicating with everyone and doing business in this incredible and unbelievable world - and the mailing lists I and others love hosting allow people everywhere to do the same. (Check it out at richmondsounddesign.com and find my email address and hidden link to my 4000 online photos where my CBR initials are at the bottom of the home page.) I may not be a paid member here for a long time so if you want to get in touch please send an email to my regular address and not here, thanks! So that's it for the first 57 years - tons of love, great adventures and no regrets, just like it should be.
