Charles's Story

I have resisted in doing this for some time - my belief is that when people start to look backwards it means that they are getting old. On the other hand, doing this has been on my mind for some time and maybe it is time to look backwards, see what has transpired, close it, and look forward. I started High School in San Antonio, Texas and moved to California in 1964, eventually graduating from Pioneer High in 1966. Still having friends from both schools, I have posted to both school sites. I have been told that I was the second youngest in our class and was 17 upon graduation. I was working at the Bun and Burger and had a dream of becoming an architect, big discrepancy between reality and the dream. The war was on, it was pre-lottery draft, and my father, a career Navy man, recommended that I go into the Navy on a minority cruise. I did, went to basic electronics and radar school and was assigned to the fleet on a repair ship. Did one tour to the Far East, saw a lot of that part of the world, was introduced to the wonderful electronics gear and cameras coming out of Japan which sparked my interests in both, made E-5 prior to discharge, and believe that I came back mentally and physically unscathed. Went to college on the GI Bill, starting at Mount Sac with an interest in mathematics and electronics, transferred to Cal Poly Pomona where I lucked into Chemical Engineering and took a degree in that discipline in 1974. I went to work for an Engineering and Construction firm in Southern California where I managed to stay for 35 years, first as a Process Engineer and later as a Project Engineer. Most of my projects were refinery ...Expand for more
and power plant related. I have fond memories of some of the assignments (Alaska, Iran, South Texas) and the people that I worked with for so many years, but in the end, it was just a job, marking and devouring time. I am a cancer survivor - throat and neck - lucky dog I am, having noticed an unusual lump on my throat while shaving one morning (late 2003). Had it checked out and, long story short, surgery, radiation and chemo. Eleven years down the way, no reoccurrence. This was a life changing event for me, really made me start to look at what was important, what I wanted to learn, what I wanted to do for fun, and made me keenly aware of the value of time and my own mortality. I learned how to use a view camera, ride a motorcycle (and work on and restore them as well as vintage VWs), traveled to Iceland and Italy, in short, just moved on with my life. As I move closer to retirement, I have several projects that I am working on, including completion of a 1950 Vincent Comet and a 1970 Triumph Bonneville (T120R). My 1956 VW bug is completed and I will soon turn my attention to the restoration of a 1967 VW converible. I learned how to work on cars after the service and it is something that I have taken up again. I also intend to put more emphasis on my photography as well as travel. I want to learn how to do portraits. My industry (oil refining) is still on the up and up and I am good for maybe three more years, i like the work, I like the industry, I like the people. Lastly, I married and divorced twice, having one child from each. The outlook is great at 60+. I currently live happily in south Orange County, California.
