Charles's Story

Military Joined Navy 1973 5 days out of High School, for the next 24 years I would call the Navy Home, family, Life and excitement combo like a "value pack" in life. Traveled the world, East coast to West coast of the US -around the world North but not South Pole. Traveled 6 oceans and visited so many countries there is not enough room to write them in but-of all the countries the United States of America was and is the best in the world. You may visit and like other countries but-to actually see the "real" country you visit and decide if you like it better here or back in the States-the United States will win all the time. There is No place like Home. The phrase "been there done that" comes to mind when someone ask me what places have I been to and what have I seen. In my time of service I was a Navy Recruiter, Lead Naval Instructor for one of our many schools and rode 7 ships along with crossing the equator, International Date Line, North Pole and swam in almost all the oceans. In one country you can actually swim in two different Seas at the same time. I have seen much happiness and much sa...Expand for more
dness in my time of services, seen the best and the worst of the countries. Watched death and seen birth and nothing ever seems to be "just normal" -it all amazes me. Stationed on an isolated Atoll in the South Pacific, there I helped clean up nuclear waste deposits from test facilities where H-bombs were exploded back in the 50's. After being separated from their Island homes, we helped relocate over 250 islander families that were up rooted and separated from their island homes, back to their island after our clean was completed. Some 30 years had past since they last saw their island before the testing started. Coining a phrase from a well known book “these were the worst of times and the best of times” the 24 years I spent in the service but, I would do it all over again if asked. My father served this country for 27 years and it is not that I followed in his foot steps but to be a part of a family that is so big-it makes you feel so proud and yet humble –knowing that what you do does effect those at home. Go Navy-it is not just a job but-an experience that will last your life time.
