Charles's Story

Life I'm still working, chilling, and surviving in the Washington, DC - Virginia & Maryland area. It's been a few years since I settled in this area but so far so good. I chose the Metro area because of the higher income potential and it's close to my folks. It's pretty nice to finally have a place to call home after all those military moves as a kid and young adult. I'm still the same good ol' Charles/Scotty as back in the day but I'm a lot wiser with more facial hair. I've still got that strong left arm for throwing those 70 yard bombs and I've still got the "hops" in my legs for going above the rim but landing back on the ground kinda hurts due to my weight gain. Nope, I'm not the same 5'9" 135lbs skinny kid I was back in 1994 at West Springfield or the 170lbs when I graduated from Camp Zama and entered the Air Force. Over the years, making money while sitting behind a desk has me up to around 6'3" 225lbs. Grown man now...Huh?? "Nobody bothers me" (like in that ol' school karate commericial) School School life?? Whoa, long answer for that one. I went to as many schools as I did years in school. From Ft. Gordon, GA then to Ft. Bragg, NC, up to Springfield, VA and all the way across the Pacific to Camp Zama, Japan I've made and lost a lot of friends. Some memories are still fresh in my mind and some a little foggy. Starting in ZAMA, my junior year, I remember being on an experienced winning basketball team filled with All-Stars. With names like Hux (eyes behind his head), J. Sugg (too tough in the paint), Spires (keep on hustlin'), A.J.(reboundin'& comic relief), Mike Moreno(crazy handles), Wayne Nakai(defensive combo guard) , T-Mac (QB of the court), Will A. (Atsugi assasin), Dan Riggs (high flyin')and of course yours truly (all around lefty with madd hops) we had the Far East Championship on lock. Maybe it was the temperature change from the cold Tokyo area to the hot climate of Okinawa or maybe it was because we were too good but we got to Kadena and lost to a couple of scrubby teams. One of them was Simon Sanchez (Guam), they had the "Right Hand Bandit" and we couldn't stop him. Despite losing we still had fun whipping most of the teams we played. Other interesting events that happened on that trip I can't go into detail about to protect the innocent but I know the fellas remember the rap contest we attened where an infamous line that ended with "go da f**k back to Zama" almost had us brawlin' with the whole island. Luckily we got out of there without getting shanked cause it was a close call. WEST SPRINGFIELD? Hmmm.. I remember getting lost trying to find my classes those first couple of days my freshman year. My skinny locker close ...Expand for more
to the sports lobby where someone wrote a racial slur that almost had all 85 black folks, in that 2100 student school, about to rumble cause it was so offensive. We had the best girls basketball program in the state and I got a sample of their skills, first hand, in a 3 on 3 tournament. I had my usual freshman bball partners Omar Razi and Taj Lewis on my team but they had a team headed by HEATHER Turner who could no doubt play but she was fine too. So while mesmerized by her beauty we almost lost the game. We won by one point but it was disputed the next day and the girls went around school saying that they won by a point. Military Life in the Air Force?? Hmmmm... There are some good memories and then there are some I'd like to forget. I remember leaving MEPS with the expectation of four smooth years of military service. It didn't take long for me to realize my train of thought was wrong. My plane from Pennslyvania to Chicago was delayed by a storm in Ohio so instead of arriving in San Antonio that Thursday night I slept in Chicago Hotel. That Friday morning I went to the airport to find the next flight to San Antonio wasn't until 4 that afternoon. Me and other recruit (short-term) finally arrived in San Antonio on a hot muggy night. No T.I.'s there to pick us up so we had to catch a cab from the airport to billeting. No one on base knew what flight(battalion) we belonged to so we had to stay the night in billeting. Finding our proper assigned squadrons was a difficult task on a Saturday morning since most of the base was off. I finally got to the 321st TRS around 1700hrs, just in time for chow, with TSgt Farnsworth there ready to chew me out. "Do you think you're special?" I remember him screaming as he put his finger right between my eyes so close I could feel it, but he never touched me. Two days late isn't the best first impression but it was a negative lasting one. What made it worse was that the other recruit had a long mohawk so he got in big trouble when he got caught looking at the T.I. table in the mess hall. About four or five of them surrounded and screamed at him. I was a little scared too knowing that could of been me. We both stood out because we were still wearing our civilian clothes(baggy shirt & baggy Karl Kani jeans). To make it more embarrassing, Sunday morning, I had to tuck my shirt in and add a green canteen. Clothing issue was closed so I had to march to church that morning, in formation, while everyone else wore BDUs. Being 6'2" , I marched on the outside in the 4th element looking out of place. I was the scapegoat for anything that went wrong the next 6 weeks of basic. Ughhhhh... (like Charlie Brown)
