Charles's Story
Life
ter graduation from Gilchrist High School I enrolled at Oregon State College. I was there for two years-then enlisted in the Army where I spent three years. While in the service I was enrollrd in the army Specialized Training Program at Princeton University. During my time at Princeton I met my future wife Mary-Elma Allen.
The ASTP was elimated and I was shipped to Fort Carson in Colorado where I Joined the 104th Infantry Division in April 1944.We trained for four months and then were shipped to Europe to join the fight against the Germans. The War in Europe ended May 8,1945 the day I received a Battlefeild Commission as a 2nd Lt.
The 104th Infantry Division was shipped back toth U.S. in June 1945 and I was granted a thirty Leave. Mary-Elma who lived in Pennsylvania came to Oregon and we were married on July 22,1945. The war ended in the Pacific Theatre in August of 1945 while I was on leave. I was in the Army until July of 1946. Marjorie our first child was born...Expand for more

We returned to Oregon and I enrolled in the school of Engineering at OSC, graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering and went to work for Gilchrist Timber Company.
I was employed by Gilchrist Timber from June 8, 1949 until the Company was sold to Crown Pacific in October 0f 1991. I called Gilchrist home for 53 years 1938 to 1991.
Mary-Elma and I enjoyed the time we lived in Gilchrist. We raised our five children in Gilchrist and they all graduated from Gilchrist High School.
We moved to Eugene, Oregon in September of 1991. We are closer to some of our 10 grand children and fourg great grand children.
Mary-Elma enjoys the concerts at the Hult Center, sings in the choir at the United Methodist Church, sings with a
women's choral group and plays golf
with nine hold ladies group at Eugene Country Club.
I play golf, tie a few flies for fishing and go fishing when the weather is nice. I have spent the last year learing to use this Hewlett Packard Pavilion.
