Charles's Story

Does anyone remember the time back in high school when I was driving my green Fiat 124 Sport Coupe and we loaded it with 13 teenagers plus a keg of beer and made it over 5 miles to a party without breaking anything or crashing? Who was in the car? Anyone remember? After High School, it will be no surprise to hear, I did not go on to college. The rest is just another life story, although one you'd be unlikely to guess. I worked various jobs for a while and then I traveled to Central America via New Orleans, Key West and Ft. Lauderdale on my way to Rio, Brazil in my green FIAT! I never made it as far as Rio, only making it as far as Guatemala and the Honduran border... I have wonderful stories to tell of that trip...It was quite a six month adventure. Over quite a few beers my story includes harrowing tales of everything from machine gun toting bank guards, security stops, border crossing customs adventures, Visa challenges, foreign language school, thieves, drug dealers, prostitutes (no I didn't hire them but they were colorful nonetheless), gas station con artists, crooked bank staff, beautiful women, hot Latin fiestas, vehicle break-downs, unlikely repairs without parts, beautiful blue water rivers and waterfalls, food poisoning, snorkeling with giant mantas and sharks, assorted gringo characters, rebel guerrillas, getting stranded overnight deep in the jungle near the top of a volcano, big stupid mistakes that should have cost me my life, terrifying night time passage down huge mountain passes in driving rain with giant trucks, their drivers saying prayers and making the sign of the cross before departing the gas station to head down (there are reasons for the rosaries and giant illuminated crucifixes!), driving through deep mud in remote locations, getting stuck in up to the doors, getting towed out by friendly passerbys in a 4wd pickup, paying them with cigarettes and simple toys for their kids, warm Caribbean waters, burning hot volcanic black sand beaches on the Pacific, crazy big surf, a drowning pig in a river being pulled out to the ocean, it being saved by a heroic young swimmer, fishermen in canoes braving violent high surf - who could not swim! , going fishing in salt marshes with some young children who taught me to catch shrimp with a cast net and fishing for catfish with hooks and fishing line on a soda can, finding out how baby catfish have razor sharp poison barbs that hurt like hell!, sleeping in a "hotel" with a bed made of nothing but wood and twine, with bats flying around inside, illuminated by lightening flashes during a violent thunderstorm, camping outside to the sound of screaming howler monkeys in the night, exploring ancient Mayan ruins, eating goat and other unidentifiable meats, trying to get non-english speaking locals to somehow convey to me what I was being served, beyond "carne", (picture young Senorita's pantomines of a goat's beard and horns and bleats), children in super remote indigenous villages who screamed and ran in wonderment and delight at the sight of me, a white man, (driving a green Fiat with NY plates) I'm sure they'd never seen one... I only saw military vehicles out there, visiting sprawling impoverished campesino sites, living in affluent Antigua with it's beautiful church ruins, destroyed several times by the nearby Volcan de Agua, the list goes on. When I got back from my trip, partly by bus, partly hitchhiking, I got sick as hell with Hepatitus and spent nearly 6 months convalescing before making a full recovery. I really wouldn't have to make up much to make a good movie storyline, all I'd really had to do to make it a hit would be to have died, but then I would've missed half the fun! I later traveled to Europe spending most of my time in England visiting my brother, and in Duesseldorf, Germany, where I worked as a decorator, hanging wallpaper and painting. I moved to California in 1989. I eventually gave up ...Expand for more
waiting tables and selling cars to become a stockbroker in San Francisco in 1990. I married an English girl I'd met in London. We returned to London in 1993 where we had two daughters, in 1995 and 2000. We lived there for 11 years. I worked as an International Private banker with Merrill Lynch, then as a middle markets broker for Lehman Brothers and later Citigroup Global Markets. I managed investment portfolios and traded global stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities and more for wealthy families, and small to mid sized banks and asset managers in Europe and the Middle East. I worked hard with long days, a long commute and occasional travel. I enjoyed my work immensely. Our children went to a prestigious private school on a beautiful campus in the Kent countryside. My wife drove a Range Rover and I enjoyed blasting around in my Porsche 911. Skiing in the Alps, driving through Normandy to Paris, France and trips for either business or pleasure to Florence, Milan, Athens, Geneva, Lisbon, Vienna, Budapest, the Caribbean and New York were wonderful experiences. On the surface things were good but in time my wife and I had challenges in our relationship, quarreling often. She was bored, and eventually was both unfaithful and alcoholic. That's not a good combination. It became an extremely difficult time for me. I spent the time I wasn't working with the children, taking them swimming and hiking every weekend. As our marriage deteriorated, I saw my older daughter's happy, glowing demeanor become markedly more serious, her smile too often absent. Our younger daughter's speech wasn't developing as it should have been, she was three at the time. My heart ached so badly I lost 25 lbs. I felt powerless and imprisoned, and my love for my wife had became nothing but agony. I convinced my her that we should move to America, away from things as they were (in particular certain "friends" and drinking buddies). I transferred my job to Raleigh NC and moved with my family, hoping things could be better. Eventually they were, but not together. I divorced my wife of 14 years, keeping primary custody of our daughters aged 4 and 9. I left Citigroup Smith Barney and joined Lincoln Financial/Sagemark Consulting where I now provide Financial Planning and Asset Management to affluent investors. I married my wife Jane in late 2005, bringing me two step-daughters, aged 20 and 30, the 20 year old in college and now (unexpectedly) living back at home with us, the 30 year old is disabled. My younger daughters, now 8 and 13, have become extremely happy and very successful in school. My business has been growing and we enjoy North Carolina's mountains and rivers and beaches as often as we can. Life is simpler but richer. But for one dark and painful year, my life so far has been happy and full of adventure. I enjoy civic duty as an active member of Rotary International in my local town of Holly Springs. I get my car on the race track for high performance driving and autocross events through my membership of the Tar Heel Sports Car Club. I'm a member of Mensa and the local beekeeping association, and I like occasionally joining their meetings and social events! I enjoy gardening, growing an abundance of tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and peppers, as well as cultivating herbs and gourmet mushrooms including shittakes, oysters, winecaps and more. I keep a couple bee colonies. I've taken up kayaking and rock climbing, at least a beginning anyway, and I keep pretty fit, running, cycling, swimming and lifting weights. With things so good now, I can't help but wonder, as I begin to make more substantial income again whether it will bring me more happiness or will it somehow bring trouble upon me again. ("cause when life looks like easy street there is danger at your door" - Robert Hunter, The Grateful Dead - Aoxomoxoa (1969)) I can't worry too much about that though; I just have to follow my plan...
