Charles's Story
Life has been pretty interesting since 1962. I stayed in San Antonio until the Fall Semester 1969 when I went to San Marcos and Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State). Before that, I served in the Marine Corps and received an AA degree from San Antonio College and had fun. One of my most enjoyable experiences was playing baseball for the Alamo City All Stars team with Henry Henke and Mike Behnsch from Harlandale. We were a very good amateur baseball team and I pitched on that team. A year or so later I played for the San Antonio Owls in the old Cosmopolitan League and had the "pleasure" of Rudy Casanova (Harlandale) hitting a home run off me.
I graduated from SWTSU in 1972, then received an MPA from SWTSU in 1974. I played baseball for a team from Kyle, Texas that had players from the Southwest Texas State University baseball team and I made the Hill Country All Star baseball team as a third baseman (I was no Henry Henke or Rudy Casanova, but I did OK). I received a J.D. from UT Law S...Expand for more
chool in 1979 and a PhD in Government from UT in 1980. In between I got married and we had three children (two girls and a boy). My children are now adults with children (my grandkids) living in San Marcos. One of my daughters graduated from Texas State about three years ago (2010).
I practiced law in San Marcos and taught at Texas State as a professor in Political Science from 1981 until 1999. In between I was the elected Criminal District Attorney for Hays County and served as the Acting City Attorney for San Marcos.
In 1999 I relocated to Brownsville to teach at the University of Texas at Brownsville. I was tenured by the UT System Board of Regents and served as the Chair of the Government Department. I practiced corporate law (still do). For the last four years I have also taught PhD courses for Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. I married again several years ago and, surprise surprise, have two more children from that marriage---a four year old daughter and a five month old boy.
