Charles's Story

After high school, I took a summer job with the Forest Service in Kernville (1959) and later that year enrolled in college at Humboldt State. I worked a total of five summers for the Forest Service, 4 at Kernville and one (1963) on the Sierra at Dinkey Creek near Shaver Lake. I graduated with a BS in Forest Management in January 1964 and concurrently was drafted in the Army serving basic at Ft Ord then on to Officer Candidate School at Ft Sill, OK. I was commisioned in artillary as a 2LT then transferred into Army Intelligence and Security (AIS) then attended OFC at Ft Devens, MA the on to one year in Korea (Taegu and Seoul) the back to the states to finish out my active duty time as the Post Engineer at a very small military facility called Vint Hill Farms Station, Warrenton, VA about 40 miles south of DC. Then back to good old Porterville to help my father herd turkeys at a place near Shafter, CA. After a year of that, I decided to get a little different job and got on with Rain For Rent in Bakersfield. By then it was January 1968. In 1964 I was transferred to Albuquerque, NM and in November of that year, married Sherry Sanford of Bakersfield. Our first son was born there in July of 1976. In February of 1977 we transferred again to Rupert, ID still working in the irrigation equipment business. In November of 1982 we moved back to CA (Oakhurst)...Expand for more
then moved to Madera, Kerman, San Joaquin, finally ending up in Fresno. Sherry and I raised three sons and one daughter. The last three being born in Burley, ID. All now live in Fresno and I see them regularily including three grandchildren (two girls and a boy). June 8, 2008 my wife Sherry passed away here in Fresno after two years on kidney dialysis and liver failure related to diabetes. She left me with many fond memories over 33+ yrs and four great kids for which I will be eternally grateful. I absolutely love the mountains and go to old favorite places as often as possible. I spent my first 3 yrs of college in a brand new dorm finished in 1959. My current age is 68. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be in a rest home. I was so completely wrong. 12/10/2012 I am still working on a ranch in Mendota, CA. I am not sure retirement is, or should be, a way to conclude my time on earth. However, I am sure I wish to slow down a bit so that I can spend more time enjoying the great out-of doors of this great country. Hopefully, I will become one of last survivors of the Class of 1959. I can't believe it's been 53 years since the end of high school. If you live long enough you will get "old". I just don't feel old; only my body feels old. The hills are getting steeper and take longer to climb though they are still the same.
