Charles's Story
Life
In high school, you knew me as Charlie or Chuck. I graduated from Marshall University with a journalism degree. After working for newspapers in Huntington and Charleston, we (my wife, Debbie, who hails from Barboursville) moved to Florida where I worked for "The Tampa Tribune" a few years. In late 1979, with two young children and a desire to be nearer to family, we moved to Kentucky where I was editor of publications in Kentucky Power Company's public affairs and corporate communications office in Ashland.
Five years later, we moved to Pikeville, Ky., with Kentucky Power when I was promoted to human resources director. That lasted 10 years until a major downsizing move hit the company and I returned to corporate communications; responsible for the company's internal and external communications in Kentucky, southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia, and Tennessee.
That job was also downsized in late 2005 and I took early retirement rather than have to move back to Ashland in a severely downgraded position. I now own and operate a courthouse research business for primarily natural gas companies seeking lease agreements of mineral rights.

Electric Power (Kentucky Power), and I also pastored a Free Will Baptist church near Pikeville for 20 years; resigning in August 2011 to accept the fulltime pastorate of Thirteenth Street Free Will Baptist Church in Ashland, KY, which we attended from 1980 to 1985 before moving to Pikeville with the power company. My wife and I eventually moved back to Ashland in August 2012...seven years after first being asked to return to our home church and I expect we will remain here for a while to come.
We have two sons, both married. One lives in Lexington, Kentucky. Number one son is a senior officer for the federal prison in Lexington. Son number two and his wife and three children moved home from California in 2011 where he served in the Army (thankfully discharged and then working on the same base as a government contractor for the Army before deciding to move back to the hills). He works as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic. He and his wife now have four children: three sons and a daughter. Grandson 1 is 10, grandson 2 is five, and the granddaughter is four years old. The baby grandson just turned 1 in March and is the only grandson to be born away from the California messes.
