Charles's Story

Greetings from New Hampshire. Most of you knew me as Roddy McDowell. I always hated that name, so when I got to college in Atlanta(Emory), 600 miles away where nobody knew me, I told everyone my name was Rod, and it stuck. Since that was from my middle name, I am officially Charles R. McDowell, but now you know what I go by. Quick biography: After college graduation, I spent a year at Air Force pilot traing in Valdosta, GA. During that year, I met my wife at a wedding in Jacksonville. My next stop was Merced, CA for more training to learn to fly the KC-135, tanker, then on to Minot, ND for the next five years. During my four months in CA, we got engaged--Barbara was teaching in Southern CA. After North Dakota, where my daughter Tracy was born, it was back to Merced for four years as an instructor. The rest of my 25 years in the Air Force included two years in Guam where Laurie was born, three years in Rome, NY,, where Christopher was born, six years in Birmingham,AL, then three years in Portsmouth NH where I retired. For a number of reasons, I am still in NH. Tracy went on to the Univ. of NH and has been teaching now for a number of years. After years in Dover, NH I am now in Manchester where my day job is babysitting Tracy's children. My "b...Expand for more
osses" are in the picture I posted. My daughter Laurie graduated from St. Michael's College in Burlington, VT. She now lives in Dedham,MA outside Boston, an hour's drive from here, and any day now will be giving me my third grandchild. My son Chris has been in Clearwater, FL for the last three years working as a cook. Last August, on my drive back from visiting him, I spent the night in VB and on a whim looked up my high school friend, Mike Jennette. We visited the next day and that's when I learned about the reunion. He gave my e-mail address to Betsey Gilliam and she and her team have kept me updated on the plans. I am really excited about seeing people for the first time in 48 years---pretty overwhelming. My daughter Laurie got me onto the Classmates web-site, and since I am still new to this means of communication(I still prefer the phone) I will try my best to keep up. So that's the story. Although my wife and I are now divorced, we have a very cordial relationship. She retired from her job as a school principal last year and this past year babysat at least two days a week, which has worked out well for both of us. We have terrific children, grandchildren, and sons -in-law, so we are well blessed. Looking forward to seeing you in October!
