Charlie's Story

Life Graduated PS82 went up the hill to PS117 then RHHS. Lived on 146th Street near Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica. Not listed in RHHS yearbook graduated over summer 1949, See me in Math Club & Engineering Club In 1949 took Cheerleaders to away games in my car. I Drove a tow truck for Uncle and others while in college. Also had several door-to-door sales jobs including with Electrolux. BChE NYU 1957 started as Feb. 50 freshman and interrupted schooling to go in Army. Then MChE Pratt 1963 after starting at Columbia. I did basic traiing at Fort Dix, NY in July - August 1954. Then I went to the Army Guided Missile and Fire Contol School at Fort Blisss, El Paso, Texas. Here I had a 1951 Buick Special sedan that I used to invade Juarez, Mexico and to visit Texas Western Colloge (now Univ. of Texas at El Paso (UTEP))and New Mexico A&M College. These college trips were to go to football games and oh, yes, meet coeds. Then I finished my Army career at Fort Steward, GA (or Camp Steward then?)some forty miles south of Savannah. I spent my time here fighting the Civil War again. Catholic Yankees from New York City in the Army were not exactly welcomed. Also I let my position on segregation be known all too often. I went back to NYU inn June 1956 for summer class in physical chemistry. This is where I met my future wife, Edith Lewisky. We got married on May 30th and then we graduated college. Me from NYU and Edith from Barnard. That summer I started my first Chem. E. job at Pall Filtration Co., Glen Cove, NY designing porous stainless steel filters , then M.H. NYC and then in the Bronx. I worked on development of oxygen generator for nuclear submarines. Then went into battery field. First at Mallory Battery (now Duracell) on Hg & Ag developing and manufacturing primary batteries, then Sontone NiCd batteries as Assistant to R&D Vice-President, Most of my career was with IBM. I was with IBM from 1965 to end of 1991. Most of my time was spent in the Semiconductor Division in East Fishkill (Hopewell Junction) but originally was at Poughkeepsie in the SLT Board line. My final position was in the world-wide Process-Product Program Office. Married May 1957 to Edith who became a chemistry teacher. Son was born Jan 1959. He has a Ph.D. in Behavorial Psychology. He is married and they have triplet boys (born 9/14/1999). Daughter born August 1962, MBA, married, one son born Jan 1993 and a stepson who was born October 1992. I am also a member of the United States Power Squadrons. I was Commander of Peekskill Power Squadron 1972-1973 and District 2 Commander 1978-1979. District 2 had 21 Squadrons with about 3,000 members in Fairfield County, CT, and Berkshire area of MA, and eastern NY above NYC to Canadian border. Was also on Cub Scouts Exec Committee & President of Fawn Ridge Civic Association. Now in a genealogy club, computer club, Knights of Columbus, Camp Gordon Johnston Museum Association and several social clubs. Also active in Democratic Party, and I am a past Lake County Democratic Executive Committee. Wife was a delegate to 2000 Democratic National Convention. I went as a newspaper correspondent and wrote articles about our adventures.
