Charlie Ross:

Charlie's Story
After graduating from the hallowed halls of good old St. Mikes I left Hamady Bros. for a job in the factory. Since the folks couldn't afford to send me to university, I pursued a skilled trades apprenticeship. I figured I'd let General Motors foot my education bill. I completed a Die Maker apprenticeship at Chevy Frame & Stamping (now Flint Metal Center) on Bristol Rd. in 1971.
My beautiful bride, Kathy Fischer (St. Agnes), and I were married in 1968. We have three beautiful and intelligent daughters (I am going to heaven since I have already put in my purgatory time - helped raise three girls) and five wonderful grandkids who all live within ten miles! We are fortunate!
Careerwise, I became involved in my union, serving seven years as committeeman and 14 yrs. as apprentice coordinator, which I thoroughly enjoyed. During those years I chaired several area apprentice committees, including 9 yrs. as the chair of the state apprentice committee and served on various advisory boards at Mott CC and the Michigan Virtual Automotive College. Very rewarding. I also participated in school career days, spreading the word about the opportunities in skilled trades. I once did a career day presentation at the Flint School of Choice (our school!). It looked so much smaller but was in excellent condition. What a trip. The room I was assigned to was ...Expand for more
the drafting room. What a trip. (Bless you, Sr. Ann Francis.)
On the home front, Kathy, involved mother that she is, became active in the Girl Scouts, serving for more than 25 yrs. in various positions. While our daughters were involved, I was an actual card-carrying Girl Scout and part-time co-leader!
In the education arena I pursued an Associate's in Industrial Technology and a Bachelor's in Industrial Mgt. (made me a more credible bargainer).
In my quaint community of Linden (we've lived here since '71), I have served on the School Board and am currently a City Councilor.
As a family we have always camped, taking the girls to the ends of our country and Canada, too. Kath and I now enjoy taking the grandkids. It's much more fun than reading a book or watching TV in the trailer.
I love the outdoors. I hunt deer and turkey, trout fish and have backpacked some really cool country. Lately, my oldest grandson has reinvigorated my interest in these pastimes as my hunting and fishing buddy.
I retired at the end of 2006 and enjoy it thoroughly. Best job I ever had! To feel useful and get out of the house I occasionally drive the school bus or substitute teach (always been interested in education).
Life is Good and the Class of '65 rocks!!!
Addendum: We now have a great grandson!!! Graeson will be three January 10th. Life is GOOD!!!
