Charlie's Story

Life as I've lived it... Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting '..holy sh*t ..what a ride!' (George Carlin) Updated JANUARY 24, 2015 (SIGNED UP AGAIN TODAY) Hello old friend.. Waz up?? Hope you are well! What's to say after 50 years?? Are we really in our 60's now :( I'm now collecting my well deserved Social Security and thanks for your contributions... Learned 7 years ago I have prostate cancer and even with that news, I feel life has been good to me since I am still here to remember it all, well most of it anyway.. I hope the same is true for you as far as life being good is concerned :) I have loved and lost and finally found the woman of my dreams in 1995 at the spry age of 45, and Katy and I have been married going on 15 years and together for 20. Good things come to those who wait, but gotta tell ya, I'm glad I didn't have to hold my breath :) I have seen war and all its uselessness.. I spent my 21st b'day admitted to a hospital in Chu Lai, South Vietnam for Molaria.. I thank God it wasn't a bullet or shrapnel and yet I am still proud to say I am a Veteran.. I have now found that my exposure to Agent Orange most likely led to my Prostate Cancer and am now the lucky recipient of a Veteran's Disability paycheck for it... whoop-friggin-eee and a big "thank you" for paying your taxes :) ... I am a big supporter of DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and feel their cause is well worth the donations I send in and supports a need for our men and women in service. . I went the wrong way with drugs and lived to talk about it to impressionable high school students in Mr. Wells and Mr. Gaffney's classes at Mountain View High along with my good friend Carlos "wanna be biker" Baralt upon my return from Vietnam in 1972 and I also lost one of my dearest friends and fellow classmate, Charlie Myers, to them in 1990.. Of course now that I have the prostate thing and my wife having melanoma (she is now in recovery and doing well, thank you), we get Medical Marijuana and I don't really think it will lead to us becoming addicts of any kind... so crank up the Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and let's party... do my eyes look red?? Upon getting out of the Army in '72, I worked at Marine World Africa USA in Redwood City... got to play with lions, tigers, dolphins and elephants as a perk... fellow Eagle, Ross Bolton ('68) was a Killer Whale trainer there and I would join him to feed them from time to time... I then went on to HP (Happy People/Horny People/Hypocritical People) for 10 years where I was unceremoniously cut loose by my alcoholic wise azzz "female dog" of a boss (Jane) for reasons she could never elaborate on... what a skank she was! If I sound upset over this part of my life, well, I was... Bill and Dave are most likely turning over in their graves over what has become of the great company they founded. The silver lining to the above was I then spent the next 7 years (the 80's mostly) living in Truckee along the banks of the Truckee River and working at Squaw Valley and having a season ski pass... I have stood atop the highest peaks at Squaw listening to the silence of the falling snow before dropping off a 20 foot cornice & making first tracks in the new powder... I also got to ski with guys who went on to star in and film Warren Miller ski flicks... I just didn't get that "good" :) Truckee was where my Father taught in the late 40's and where my brother, John, spent part of his childhood across the hiway from the Truckee River... It was always a dream of mine to return to where they once lived and be a part of what I missed... Dream fulfilled :) I lived in an 18 foot trailer in the midst of the Tahoe National Forest from Spring to Winter's start, as a Park Ranger at Stampede Reservoir near Truckee for 4 seasons during the off season at Squaw along with my trusted best friend, Aspen, my long coat German Shepherd who on a couple of occasions sat quietly as I plucked porcupine quills from his mouth and snout.. I swear I could hear him thanking me as his eyes would look into mine as I plucked out the quills... I made Lynx golf clubs in Dayton, NV while living in Sparks, NV for a short time after my stint in Truckee and worked with a ski tour company being a host for corporate ski trips to Heavenly Valley and Squaw on the weekends... Skiing for free was a lifestyle I came to enjoy although I think my knees are paying me back now... Thanks to my brother, John who was a Supervisor with the Mountain View Recreation Department, I was able to come back to Mountain View in '89 to work for the city I grew up in, caring for Pioneer Park & the Civic Center, across from the old high school, only to blow out my lower back and be made to retire 10 years later with a pension and full medical... I have lived to see my brother and parents pass away, and now feel the loneliness of being the sole survivor of a family.. shortly after my return to Mtn. View I lost my brother John in September 1992.... I raised $50,000.00 for "Special Olympics" hosting the "John Welch Memorial Golf Tournament/ Mulligans fort the Athletes", in honor of my big brother because his son Todd, was a Special Olympian.. (Todd passed away in a house fire in 2002)... I then lost both my parents, Barbara in June, 1996 and, Jim, in November, 1996.. needless to say, 1996 was not one of my better years, though I do feel I came out a better person from caring for my parents in their final days, keeping them at home among the memories they created there and allowing me to be at their sides as they slipped away to the be with my brother, John... I am also proud of the fact that our property on Church Street in Mtn. View has now been in our family 109 years... For fun I've experienced the exhilaration of white water rafting on some of California's best class IV and V rivers and think I saw God on a couple of those trips after I got dumped from the raft into the bone chilling, raging torrent... Did amateur speed skiing and attained 98 MPH my first try... Driving my old '85 Saleen Mustang on Hwy 280 at 130 MPH and not getting caught... Surfed the "Lane" back on some memorable overhead days back in the day with Frank Torrez, Carlos Baralt and Charlie Myers... Having worked in the golf industry, I got to play for FREE anywhere I traveled ...Expand for more
and had the pleasure of playing Cypress Point and Pebble Beach in Monterey and the Old Course at St. Andrews... with all the free skiing and free golf, I believe I saved well over $20,000... :) My travels have taken me to all the islands of Hawaii (picked pineapples on Molokai just after graduation in '68), Mexico (where i quit drinking after a night of tequilla and risiella <mexican peyote moonshine>), England, Scottland, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Canada, Malta and a river cruise up the Reine from Switzerland to Amsertam and in 2013 a trip to Spain, Gibraltar & Morocco, then on to another river cruise through the South of France... this year 2015, we are off to the Dominican Republic (baseball beeeen bery bery good to me) and a Alaska Cruise with time in Denali Park for our anniversary in June... Next year it's off to Venice and a Mediterainian cruise to Greece and Turkey and Dubrovnic in the former Yugoslovia where my Great Grandfather was from.... I feel that Ireland is the best and i would live there if i could (it's a heritage thing)... Made it to Costa Rica a couple of years ago and it was something I would recommend to anyone... beautiful country, wonderful people and great food. This all brings me to where I am now, in Scott's Valley, with my lovely and caring wife, Katy and step-son Kiel, a former Marine Embasey Guard and Sonoma State graduate and County of Marin employee... I am no longer commuting to my one day a week job at Boulder Creek Golf Club since I am now officially retired :). There are also many trips to our 2nd home in Graagle, CA where we fish, hike and golf (Graeagle was founded back at the turn of the century by one of my relatives, then known as Davies Mill)... I spend my Wednesdays in Mountain View doing landscape work at our apartments on Church Street to stay connected to my roots and get off my butt :)... Update: sold the family property March of 2018... it was time to step aside. It's still early and there are unfinished chapters ahead though the sands in the hour glass are filling faster than I care to think about.. I take stock of what I have and how I got here and the handful of friends who have stuck by my side from the early days of my youth and I feel blessed.. Taking a minute to remember those of us who did not make it this far and the times we spent together as children of the 50's growing up amidst the orchards of Mountain View... Life was simpler then and I do cherish the memories of those times and the people who were a part of it all.. Thanks for reading this and keep the faith!!! GO EAGLES! In memory of: Charlie Myers, Bill Van Meter, Don Kirby, Kenny Holden, Igor Sands, Peter Stahor, Patty Wattles, Ross Bolton, my dear old childhood friend of 55 years, Joe "Vato" Valencia and recently (Thanksgiving 2014) my dearest old friend of 56 years Frank (Surf-Daddy) Torrez who was one day older than me and who I will miss dearly... and to all of our classmates who have left this life too soon, may you Rest in Peace... I did enjoy our 21st reunion back in '89... was great to see some of the ol' faces and catch up on life and it's bizarre nature... ps... if you read this... please let me know who you are... seems many have looked, but no one leaves a note... Cheers... Charlie School geez... this is a loaded area isn't it??? i think miss dederer and mrs. woodward were the two best teachers... i enjoyed english and they seemed to see that in me... mr. bush was a bit of a crack up in biology and it was cool that he took us surfing on weekends... the biggest crush i had would have been on bb... all things considered it's most likely best that never came to fruition as it took me longer than most to get my priorities straight and settle down... then there was me accidently mooning lori ruiz and her friends as we drove away from school on our way to go surfing and having their boy friends hunting me down for retribution or the time i swapped out a pack of my cigerettes for those in miss dederer's purse one day and being found out... got to take peggy willems to a homecoming dance, barb brandenberg to the jr. prom and yvonne frolic to the senior prom... all quiet memorable... i can't say as there were that many funny things that happened during those four years... i was pleased to be among the graduates of '68 when the day finally came... i would do it all again and again... the 60's were the best... the mistakes made were lessons learned... the friendships made, unforgettable... keep the faith... cw Workplace so... work is the subject... i feel like maynard g. crebs when it comes to this... WORK!! gadz i have had more jobs than carter has liver pills.. see if i can figure the time line for this one.. early years (60's): ike wilsons car wash, food fair, union 76 on el camino and grant, alta view animal hospital and walgreens and harley davidson golf carts on middlefield road, that i can remember... next came (70's & 80's): then i got f---ing drafted into the army and service in vietman & got out in '72, then came marine world africa usa (redwood city), hewlett packard (10 yrs), squaw valley lodge, squaw valley inn, squaw valley security, park ranger in truckee (stampede resevoir) 8 years in the truckee area, ski tour escort for corporate groups, the nugget casino hotel (sparks, nv), lynx golf clubs (carson city, nv) and then... most recent (89 - present): city of mountain view parks department (10 yrs and a medical retirement) and pasatiempo golf club (santa cruz) 10 years, boulder creek golf club (boulder creek, ca) and now officially retired... that's a pretty varied list i must say and i owe it all to my ability to get work no matter what the area of expertise (no brain surgery though) and to land on my feet when adversity comes my way... sure i wish i had gotten a college education, but somehow all the lessons life has given me and the friends and people i have met along the way are priceless... of all that i have done, i miss my life in truckee the most... seeing seasons change and skiing the best mountain in the tahoe region for free all those years was a dream come true for me and even while making no more that $8 an hour, i would never change it for anything... of course working at a top 100 golf course was not bad either! keep the faith... and thanks for taking the time to read this... charlie

Happy Birthday Mr. Gillafunk(y)... get out and boogie on one of your machines and test out that new helmet while you drive into the sunshine... Have a great next trip around the sun :)
Going thru old photos and came upon this one from the day they blew up Blyth Arena at Squaw Valley in 1983.
It was the home of the opening ceremonies for the 1960 Winter Olympic Games and where the USA Men's Hockey team w
