Charlie's Story
Attended University of Oklahoma, got a Bachelor's Degree in Instrumental Music Education. Had a lot of good times while there - sometimes I wish I could go back in time and relive it all (or at least most of it). Ended up never teaching in the schools, but the degree still opened some doors for me.
Worked on a Master's Degree in Philosophy for a couple of years while working full-time, but didn't finish.
Worked in retail for a while (a little over five years total) after I left graduate school. Moved from Norman / OKC area to Texas in 1987. Being an Okie living in Texas is like being a stranger in a strange land.
Finished career in retail in early 1990 (store was closed). Was unemployed several months, then worked in a liquor store for a month. Started career in public service in June 1990.
First worked as an Income Assistance Worker (determined eligibility for Food Stamps, AFDC, and Medicaid) for 14 months. Started working as a Social Worker in August 1991, and did that job until November 1998. Currently working as a Manager (since 2004) i...Expand for more
n a workforce center where I conduct training / workshops / orientations / testing for job seekers, among other things.
I pretty much hate the city where I live (not too many decent restaurants, no worthwhile movies or concerts ever come here, and there's no really great bookstores or music stores here; other than that it's a great place to live if you're a fascist ultra-conservative who likes the smell of mule s--t), but I did meet my wife Teresa here, so that's something. We've been married since 2001 (my first marriage, no kids (we're too old)), but we have three surrogate children: BJ (a 20-year-old Mealy Amazon parrot), and two seven-year-old dogs that we adopted from SPCA (Bob and Amy).
Other than that, I'm still waiting to win the Lotto so that we can get the hell out of here and move somewhere else where there's decent restaurants, decent bookstores and music stores, and decent concerts and movies to entertain us.
P.S. My mom and dad are still around, so if you knew them say hello whenever you see them - it'll make my mother happy.
