Charlie's Story
2006 I was able to achieve a life long ambition to travel to Alaska by motorcycle. Winter of 2006-2007, I purchased a kayak in Old Forge. I had the chance to try it out some down off Severne Point before I broke my wrist in July. Then in October I got in a little more kayak time. The winter of 2007-2008 I started hiking to lose weight and successfully lost 60 lbs. And learned what a stress fracture was, and took in about 6 miles of the Fingerlakes Trail. More kayaking in August on Waneta & Lamoka Lakes. And started makeup on Halloween. The winter of 2008-2009 I got in more hiking, didn't lose any more weight, seems muscle weighs more than fat, training for a 10 day backpacking trip on the western-most Fingerlakes Trail. Got in 12 miles before I called it off. Thunderstorms everyday were making me nervous. I started doing face painting in the spring right up until Halloween-a 4-7 hour process. And here it is 2010 and I've got gas(a musicians disease-gear acquistion syndrome). After trying to start a band in 2000 and aquiring a large dollar amount of gear, ...Expand for more
rather than sell it at a loss, I stored some of it and used some of it for small time DJ work. Now suddenly after all these years, I have decided to downsize(read lighter) some of my gear. And my brand new 10 year-old stuff is still unused. What's the matter with me? Once I get this out of my way, I'll get back to hiking, I discovered that just like racing, it costs big money to go light, but because of it my pack will be lighter this year.
And here it is 2012 and after a lot of termoil in the workplace, I've retired after giving 40 years of my life to the company. At first it was anger, then as reality crept in, I looked at my options, which weren't so bad. And now after 2 1/2 months not working, I don't think I'll ever go back. I have enough 401k and SS in two more years and then retirement from the company in three years after that. Only five years after that and I'll have to start taking minimum distributions from the 401k. If I live that long! And so, with the internet as my able companion and my imagination in gear, I move on to greater adventures.
