Charlotte's Story
Life
When I joined the Air Force in Dec 1968, I left Alabama for basic and training in the Admin career field. I wanted to travel, however, my first assignment was at Maxwell AFB. Although that wasn't my idea of travel, it was a nice base to be stationed. I met my future husband on base. In Dec 1970, he left for Viet Nam and I went to Okinawa (Japan). Three months later we married in Okinawa and in 1972 I was discharged and had a baby girl. We were assigned to Honolulu for 2 years before he got an assignment at the Pentagon. He's orignially from VA so this was good. I had a son in 1976, the same year I began working in Wash DC at the Daughters of the American Revolution. I was there a year before taking my civil service exam. I worked for the Air Force at Bolling AFB DC and at the Pentagon. Years later I transferred as a GS-12 to what was the Defense Mapping Agency, in Bethesda. I adjudicated security investigation to grant (or deny) security clearances. But a couple years later, I transferred to Security as a Personnel Security Specialist and later to Security Education. I retired April 2004 and moved 5 hrs. south (in southwest VA) to be near my kids. The Blue Ridge Mts surround me and the area I'm in is referred to as the New River Valley. I don't miss the traffic and noise of the city. I enjoyed the Wash DC area until three years before leaving. The kids each married local folks and are 'planted' (besides their dad and his family are near). I got divorced in 1983 and am very independent. He is on wife #3. I own a home and have a 3 y/o granddaughter and another is on the way. My daughter doesn't have kids yet and is a RN. Stephanie and Steven (my kids) are good kids so I'm very blessed. Since moving, I've become a volunteer and am temporarily serving as the secretar...Expand for more
y at the Senior Center where the volunteer office is located. Although I work part time, I volunteer too. (I call myself the "junior senior" (you have to be at least 55 to join). I recently joined a church and the activities help keep me busy. Soon I'll be joining a civic organization called the Ruritan Club. Back in the day my very favorite things to do were bowl and go dancing. I haven't danced in years since I'm not dating. This town is sooo small and it's difficult to meet men my age because they're either working or too old. My passion is traveling. My youngest sister (Jeanne) and Judy are in Florida, and Pat is in Ohio. My mother was in Florida until she passed last year. My dad remarried over 20 years ago and is in southern IL. I go to FL and the midwest and go on special trips. About 5 years ago, I took a trip to San Francisco and my friend and I rented a car and drove to OR where Susan Kelly is. It was nice to see her again and meet her husband and 1 of 2 daughters. I have written to Nell and Marianne Williams. In fact, next year I plan to see Marianne and make a trip to Tuskegee with her. My life's goal is to visit all the states and I only have 10 to go. With the exception of RI, I have the northern midwest states and western states to visit. In June, I took a bus tour to Canada (Niagra Falls, Montreal and Quebec). In July, I went to Ohio to visit a friend, tour Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and fly to StLouis (where I'm from orgininally) and visited with my cousins. Next month a girlfriend and I are touring Savannah, GA. Don't know yet what I'm doing next year, but I have started working on it! If anyone reads this that knows the whereabouts of my classmates or either Jimmy Cohn or Jerry Hughes, please let me know! I will eagerly respond to all messages, so write!
