Charlotte's Story
College
Since my graduation from FCC (AS degree in nursing - L.V.N.), I have attended Reedley City College (for one class because a friend and co-worker was the instructor) and San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton (I was in the process of getting my pre-requistes for the R.N. program out of the way when my husband died). I have completed a home study course in Webpage Design. Recently I attended a class in Microsoft Access and completed my first semester of Interior Design. Lately I have been toying with the idea of going back to school for a BS in Healthcare Administration.
Workplace
I began in my career path right out of high school. I have been in the medical profession for a couple of years longer than I have been a licensed nurse. Since being licensed I have worked many different types and settings of nursing. As I tell people, when I retire I will have done everything a L.V.N. could possibly do. During my working career, I was also a letter carrier for the USPS in Fresno for about six years. I gave up the career before I went "postal". After I moved to the Monterey area, I worked in a skilled nursing facility in Carmel, CA. During that time I wore two hats, one as the ...Expand for more
Director of Medical Records and the other as the Director of Staff Development. This job wasn't "lively" enough for me so in 9/04 I began work with an agency that supplies nurses to CDCR (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) all over the state. So I went to work at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad. For seven months I passed medication/s to inmates at their cell front. Then I was assigned to work the doc line where I worked directly with a physician. Hence I was his nurse for about a year. In 4/06 I had a change of venue and went to work at the newest state mental hospital, Coalinga State Hosppital. The type of patients here are SVPs (sexually violent predators). I worked M-F so I had an apartment in Coalinga (back in the valley I detest so much) and traveled home to Marina (Fort Ord to be exact) on my days off. Over a year ago I applied for a state nurse position with CDCR. I was accepted at San Quentin and CTF (Correctional Training Facility) in Soledad (it's located next door to Salinas Valley State Prison). I really wanted to go with San Quentin but had trouble finding housing. I picked my second choice of CTF and have moved back to the peninsula.
