Charlotte's Story
George B. suggested I share a bit of the past---It was only yesterdayI was President of our 8th grade class in U.S.R. I can not wrap my mind around the fact that nearly 50 yrs. have passed since then! 38 of those years, Brian and I have been happily married. HE who "dropped me" in high school because I was too quiet! "Can you hear me now?" I'm sure we have all found our voices at this point in time---afterall, we ARE in the last lap-----Richard Mackintosh was the boy next door and my 1st boyfriend, who carried my books to school every day throughout grade school. We were "Lindy" dance partners. He has been my beloved "brother" throughout my life. For 2 seasons I toured as a precision tap dancer across the country. I was captain of the line. A few girls did go straight to Radio City after touring, I chose not to--There is no room for "expression" in precision dance. So I moved on---I graduated from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in N.Y.C., dated an actor who is still on General Hospital, did lots of extra work in films, walk on parts in T.V., rode a bike in a cereal commercial, was a short shorts leg model in Menswear Magazine----all in my last life!--I had met far too many "dirty old men" in theatre, so I turned to voice. Traveled with my parents to Italy to study opera. There was a flu epidemic when we docked. My Dad caught the flu and died overnight. An Angel, Connie Roge', an Am. tourist, "appeared", helped us with a funeral abroad and took care of all the legal business to fly the "3" of us home.A very traumatic time in life. Brian surfaced from my past! We dated once again, and married in '72. Singing tragic operas became my life--workshops, performances at Amatos' Opera House, lower Manhattan. Singing filled my soul. Our son, Jensen was born 1976. I have tapes of him singing operas on the changer! Brian and I have been soulmates for 38 yrs. He's a quiet, caring, wonderful man. Rescuing any anim...Expand for more
al who needs love and a home, has been a huge part of our life together. Brian has owned and operated a trucking co. all these years. Our sons' co. recently merged with his. In 1988Brian and I bought the Gingerbread Castle in Hamburg, N. J. Maybe some of you had visited this historic sight in your childhood? It had been built in the 3o's and had been closed for many years. The restorations began. Lots of hand work--tour guide costumes, fury Disney characters with the big heads, singing nursery rhymes to record, planting and maintaining 3,000 annuals in the Castle gardens.Dinner theatre and bus loads of seniors in the main octagon bld. across from the castle, a small petting zoo---6 YEARS of hard labor, but not enough to carry it forever---cut your loses, move on---about 5 yrs. ago my gardens were chosen to be part of the local garden tour. It was tremendous work to get them picture perfect. I was taking 20 Advil a day to function because one day, the only way I can describe it; my body, in a matter of hrs. closed up like a bat! I was heading home from town, and had to shift my jeep with my forearm.I had excruciating pain like broken glass in every joint! Fast forward--I was diagnosed with RA.I researched the powerful drugs to slow down this disease (even Anti-Malarial drugs), and now I inject with Enbrel which has given me back my life. I entertained in nursing homes for at least 10 yrs, these last 10yrs I've been a "period costume" artist model and a leotard/life model.(Holding poses NOT a good thing for someone with RA.), but did it until our son had a motorcycle accident 4yrs ago His L foot was nearly torn off, but successfully re-attached. Our lives came to a screeching halt. Time heals---We're back on track, our son is doing well, and we're enjoying life on our little mountain top. (Hope you took a nap while reading this!) We wish all of you good health in this "Our Last Lap." Fondly, Brian and Charlote
