Chartles's Story
There is a misspelling of my first name, The correct spelling is Charles not Chartles. I attended Southwestern from early 1942 to mid term 1944 when I left school to join the U.S.Navy. I reported for duty at Great Lakes on Feb. 11 1944 which was my 18 birthday. I served aboard an L S T ,( landing ship tank.) We were the ones that put the troops and equipment ashore at the waters edge.
We were in 3 Invasions in 5 and 1/2 months beginning with the landing on the Philippine Island of Leyte on Oct. 20th. 1944 followed by the landing at Lingayen Gulf on the Island of Luzon on Jan. 9 1945.

ion of Okinawa on April 1st. 1945. Following the invasion of Okinawa we were assigned to be in the initial forces to hit the mainland of Japan on November 1st. Thank God for President Truman making the decision to drop the Atom bomb on Japan saving many thousands of American lives , mine included.
After returning to the states, I was separated from service April 27th. 1946. Soon thereafter I was married and started a family. In 1950 I tested for a high school diploma and was awarded a veterans diploma from Southwestern High. That accounts for my name not appearing in the graduation book.
