Cheri's Story
Life
I got married six years after high school to a Japanese man (a high school English teacher) and we have one daughter who's in the sixth grade now. My daughter and I use only English with eachother, but my husband and her communicate in Japanese. As a result, she is fluent in both languages. Emily loves to translate to her Japanese friends what I say to her. It's amazing how children can pick up another language just like that--and I had to struggle with all my languages!
College
After high school I entered Lewis & Clark College. I decided to major in foreign languages and wound up having a crazy schedule which went something like this: 1st period French, 2nd per. German, 3rd per. Russian, & 4th per. Japanese. Oh, my gosh! The hardest part was trying to force one language to recede and another to come out. I was always mixing up all four languages in one sentence. For the overseas study program I went to Russia (with all my classmates) for 3 1/2 months and then I went to Germany. The...Expand for more
last two years of college I had a Japanese roommate who convinced me that Japan was a wonderful place--and fast forward to the present. That's how I ended up living in Japan. I can't believe I've been here for 20 years already.
Workplace
Who would ever think that I would become an English teacher! I still remember struggling with English classes in junior high school, which continued throughout high school. I think even my English literature teacher gave up on me. After graduating from Lewis & Clark College I got a job working for the Ministry of Education of Japan and was placed at the Board of Education in Sapporo. I taught English in junior and senior high schools all around the city for a year. Then I got a job teaching in a Japanese kindergarten for a year--Japanese kids are so cute! Then I went back to teaching in a high school for 7 years. After that, I opened my own little English school and have about 100 students now. I'm busier than ever, but it sure is nice being the boss.
