Cheryl's Story
Life
After high school, Cheri enrolled into Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY. There she graduated with an Associate Degree in Recreational Leadership. Through her twenties, she was married and raising a daughter Elyce, and music was put aside. During this time Cheri managed a fitness club and started bodybuilding. In 1984 she placed third in a woman's New York State bodybuilding championship. In 1991, a year after moving to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Cheri met fellow musician and good friend, blues diva, Lisa Mills. So impressed with Lisa, Cheri decided to start playing music again. Through the 1990's, Cheri played drums with: rock and blues band, The Fixations for 4 years, (who toured out west a few times as far as Montana and south to the Keys), the Mobile, Alabama show band, Tribute and Lisa Mills who she still plays with on occasion. Between 1997 and April of 2004, Cheri, also known as Rhythm, helped bring success to the duo Rhythm & Rain with her creative talent and smooth harmony. Her unique array of mostly latin percussion instruments gives that full rhythm signature sound the duo was known for. The duo traveled as far as the Florida Key's each year besides the over 250 shows a year at coastal casinos, restaurants, festivals parrothead events and coporate ...Expand for more
functions. Most recently, she has put together her entertainment agency "Island of Rhythm". You can chose many different acts, all including Cheri on the drums or congas and singing backup and lead. Cheri also plays with the Mobile,AL show band, Cool Rayz, as well as other musicians such as Finger's Taylor (Jimmy Buffett's harmonica player for 26 years), Sunny Jim, A1A, Kelly McGuire & other parrot head entertainers.
Besides playing music, in 1997 Cheri went back to school to study art, her other creative passion. Her paintings have sold locally and over the internet. She has had a few of her photos grace the covers of other musician's CDs. Recently, a photo she took at a parrothead event placed in the semi-finals of an international photo contest. She also does photo restoration and website building. For recreation, Cheri is an avid windsurfer and has been on the cover of the 1995 June issue of Hobie Hotline magazine. Cheri now lives with her daughter Elyce, on a Bayou in Ocean Springs, MS.
My homes recently got washed up in hurricane Katrina along with most everything I ever owned, but I'm rebuilding them now. Life has changed but not all for the bad. I've been spending more time playing in Florida and in the Keys. Some of the gigs are Katrina fundraising related.
