Cheryl's Story

Life I married Steve, from Notre Dame, we have been married 38 yrs in August. We have 2 adult sons, and one grandson, Embrey. Our oldest, Dustin, is a police officer and his wife is a firefighter. Garden, the younger son is turning 30 in a few days, he and his wife are teachers. Embrey is the 9 yr. old son of Dustin. We have been in Colorado for the better part of the last 25 years, moving with Steve's career in school administration. We have lived all over the state, currently in Colorado Springs. I had a short lived career in advertising after graduation, followed by a long career in visual merchandising, and took that a different direction with a homestaging business, from which I retired about a year ago. We love working on houses, and are always working on a project, or two or ten! Steve was a woodshop teacher before he got into administration, and that proves quite handy. My folks still live in WF, so I go back fairly regularly to visit, but never seem to run into anyone, (not that I would recognize anyone!). Steves family moved to San Antonio while we were dating, so we go down there also, and both of our families come together at Thanksgiving nearly every year. We pick a different city, each year and all congregate there. We stay in a hotel, eat at a nice restaurant, then play cards and watch football...lots of fun! I get to spend lots of time with the grandson, and he is the light of my life! It is so much fun to see him develop and grow and learn...He is, of course, the smartest child currently living on the planet! We love to travel, whether for a weekend in the mountains or abroad, and have had a few opportunities to do so. Currently, we are empty nesters except for our 2 cats, Duffy and Varmit, both "rescued" many years ago, so we are pretty free to just go when we are ready. Through the years, we have moved a lot, never living anywhere longer than 5 years. I think that "Air Force brat" life got under our skin and we get antsy after about 3 years, wondering where we will move next! We did sit still long enough for each of our sons to go to 8th grade and high school in one town, each. As for hobbies, I am really interested in genealogy. I have done quite a lot of research on all sides of my family as well as Steves, and can trace my American heritage to the 1600's. My pedigree is not very illustrious though, we are truly "Heinz 57"! I am working on scrapbooks/family histories for my sons, so this information doesn't get "lost". I actually love doing all kinds of research/reading and a few years ago, I got nostalgic and started doing internet searches for old friends. I reconnected with several people from Hirschi, even from Junior High, who had moved away. It is a very small world with the internet! ...Expand for more
We love to walk/hike and we canoe occasionally. We were some of the "original" snowboarders in our age group! We have been blessed with a good life, and very few bumps in our road. None of them have proven insurmountable so far, we'll just keep praying that it stays that way! School Best memories from the classroom are of Mrs. Sharon Harris, our English teacher, who was also our Girl Scout leader. We played some tricks on her at school and on campouts, and she took it all in stride...mostly! I often hear people say they hated high school, maybe I am remembering with rose colored glasses, but I had a great time! As for biggest crush, inspirational teacher, etc... I think I will leave that alone, they know who they are. Some more snippets of memories: Gym Dandies, Gym Leaders, Annual Staff, Mrs. Dollars class sneaking out for doughnuts, Big D Drive-In, Friday night games and DANCES!, ...under the stairs...., pep rally skits, History class in the library with Edwin, my Biology partner doing all the "cutting" and me doing all of the writing, Mrs. Alford letting me "audit" her class when I was a Senior, just so I could be in an art class, Freddie Jack in art class, Drivers Ed, the kids coming over from Booker T., feeling VERY SMALL as a freshman getting off the bus and walking up that LONG sidewalk past the football boys, intramurals for the girls, since we didn't have our "own" sports back in the day, Neva outrunning a few varsity track boys, begging to get out of Algebra, being told "I could do it"... teacher realizing I couldn't and moving to Related Math usually referred to as "retarded" math, Mrs. Johnson, when she became Dean of Women, calling me into her office because someone reported to her that I had been "making out" with my boyfriend in front of the school in his car, he went to Notre Dame, and was no where around, so she let me go, working in the darkroom and learning about cameras, the list goes on...... College I went to TSTI,(Texas State Technical Institute), now TSTC in Waco after graduation. I received my Associates in Arts degree for Commercial Art and Advertising. I used that degree to work in advertising for about 5 years, hating just about every second. I discovered the world of visual merchandising, from one class I had at school. When the opportunity arose, I switched careers and never looked back! I spent about 20 years in that career and recently took a slight turn to homestaging, starting my own business. They work is very similar, just one is in retail stores, the other in homes. I have to have a job that allows me to be creative, and is constantly challenging and changing. Self-employment is certainly allowing for that! I have owned several businesses previously, including a retail store.
