Cheryl's Story
Wow, time really flies. I have had many, many life experiences but here are the highlights....
Graduated Austin Vo Tech 1977 as an LPN
Joined the National Guard in 1979 as a 91C Or LPN.
Was married for a short while to Ron Beckjorden for which we had 3 children from that marriage. Now, can I have that big eraser to erase my mistakes in life??
Worked many places moving to Wyoming, Colorado, back to MN then on to Wisconsin in 1985 when I was hired by the VA hospital in Tomah.
1989 I recieved the Administrator's Award for excellence in nursing and recieved a full scholarship to complete my RN.
Operation Desert Shield/Storm 11/90 thru 5/91. Served as non commissioned officer in charge of Emergency Medical Treatment at Camp Badger (13th EVAC Hospital) Saudi Arabia, only miles from the Kuwait border. Our unit had just arrived at Khobar Towers where we spent nine nights. Then a 3 day trip by helicopter's during the day to our field location, stopping at night because of the scuds, then was another couple hours by vehicle. I was also the Sgt. of the Guard the night the ground war started and I must say that w...Expand for more
as the longest night of my life, darker than....we were supposed to have an MP unit attached to protect us but that didn't happen.
Graduated WWTC with degree in Nursing 11/92. Recieved my license for RN in 3/93 after state boards. I continued to work at the VA.
1994 - 13th EVAC was changed to 13th Combat Support Hospital. I recieved my commission that year. In 1996 our unit completely disbanded and as an officer I would have had to travel many miles for a unit with an opening for a nurse. I opted to resign my commission and go IRR. I was becoming ill at the time and had problems with daytime sleepiness and had problems driving.
1998 I was diagnosed with an "undiagnosed illness". In 2002 I medically retired. In 2008 the Gov. of Wisconsin declared Jan 16th as Gulf War Illness Awareness Day, the day the air war started and many of troops were under scud attacks. As many as us age it is important they learn lesson's of the effects of chemicals on our health. More and more woman are veteran's too, needing womens health issues addressed. Current
member of VFW, She Serves(VFW),DAV and Americal Legion.
