Cheryl's Story
Life
My Spouse
Although I knew my spouse-to-be on a casual basis, I was baking bread at a friend's apartment when he stopped by to visit the friend, who wasn't there. we got to talking and didn't stop for hours and hours. This was at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
School
My Dad was in the Air Force so we moved around a bit. I went to Nursery School and some of 1st grade at the Randolph Air Force Base Elementary School. Went to Kindergarten and the first part of 1st grade at Elm Heights Elem. in Bloomington, Indiana, while my Dad was getting his MS degree in Optometry. Then spent grades 2 to 6 at Ridgeview Elem in San Antonio, Texas. One year of Junior Hi at Nimitz in San Antone, and then one year at Wiesbaden Jr. High in Germany. Then 2 years at General H. H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden, and my 2 last years at Springfield High in Spr...Expand for more
ingfield, Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C. One of the most amusing things I did was to start and participate in a drama troupe that performed plays being studied by the Springfield High English classes (or plays that were relevant to novels studied).
College
I went straight from high school to college--the Residential College within the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Learned lots more outside the classroom than in, tho I did have a few quite wonderful professors. After graduation (Major was Comparative Literature, Minor Psychology & Education) I took a year off and traveled in the US and Europe. Then I went to the University of California at Santa Cruz, earning an MA in English Lit and then Ph.D. I did a lot of college teaching, especially courses on Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Joyce's Ulysses, and creative writing (mostly poetry).
