Cheryl's Story

Life Hard to believe it has been more than 30 years since graduating from Nathan Hale. Since graduation, I've been alternating going to school, raising a family and working in the health care arena. I'm still married to my college sweetheart (and they said it wouldn't last!). We are both flexible and forgiving, so I think that is why we're still together. Plus, we are both huge Garrison Keillor fans, so we make sure that we get our quota of ketchup to get our needed mellowing agents every day. We have two children (and each has one child of their own). Both are married - to non-US citizens! Our family has become multicultural. Our daughter married a Filipino (who also is a nurse, so we "talk shop" whenever we are together). They married in Indiana, but a few months later, they had a reception in the Philippines. So we all descended on the island of Leyte for one big party (and believe me, no one parties like the Filipinos!) Our son taught in Japan for a few years and married a Japanese girl. They lived with us for about a year, and during that time, their first child was born. You never know what life is going to bring your way! Our latest adventure (summer 2004) involved following the original Route 66 through the midwest, southwest, and on to the California coast. If you have the time, I would definitely recommend the trip. You can research the route on the web and through books that are available. I was amazed by the sights along the way. Eastern Oklahoma was surprisingly beautiful, and I also loved New Mexico. Of course, there were unexpected problems, too; like the time the old alignment just seemed to disappear in the middle of the desert! I have just started a faculty position at the Indiana U. School of Nursing. I am enjoying it. I work with graduate students who are becoming nurse practitioners. I also practice one day a week at a free clinic for the medically underserved. We do the best we can with limited resources. We bought an older home that has been sadly neglected and are gradually improving it. It still has a long way to go, but we are making progress!! My husband also is an avid runner, and I try to run occasionally even though I am not very good at it. We both received black belts in Tae Kwon Do a few years ago, and I attend Jazzercise several times a week. Life has been good. I continue to have new challenges and I am surrounde...Expand for more
d by supportive family and friends. It seems hard to believe that retirement is not that far away! I feel like I'm really just getting started. 2007 Update: Life continues to bring challenges and blessings. Another grandchild was born summer 2006. I finished my first novel and I am going through the process of trying to find a publisher and not get discouraged. My daughter has had better luck, she won a fiction writing contest and one of her prizes was a trip to NY to meet with an editor with a major publishing house. While I'm waiting for my lucky break, I keep busy with my teaching position at IU School of Nursing and continue the process of developing nursing research projects. I have written some research articles, but somehow that feels like a very regimented, as opposed to a creative, process. I guess it is supposed to be, for the most part, but there can be a creative aspect to it, too. My husband and I both run and/or walk the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon every year in May. For those of you who run (or walk faster than 15 min/mile!), I would highly recommend it - it is a lot of fun and usually the weather is ideal. It is promoted as part of the kick-off to the month of activity at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which culminates in the Indy 500. 2008 UpDATE: Our big adventure for this year was our trip to Japan. Our son and his wife and child live there now. It was an amazing experience. Because we stayed with them, it was fairly inexpensive - other than airfare, of course. The Tokyo area is more Westernized than I realized - many signs are in English as well as in Japanese. We took the train in several directions from our "home base" and met our daughter-in-law's parents for the first time. I will post pictures of the shrine near the heart of downtown Tokyo. Let me tell you - Tokyo is HOT in the summer. Tokyo Disney is very unique - the DisneySea park is unlike anything in the States, and it was great to experience it through the eyes of our grandson. We also experienced our first earthquake above 5.0 on the Richter scale. Before and after our trip to the East, we visited the west coast to see our daughter, son-in-law and two rapidly growing (and very active) grandchildren - who are among my biggest fans. Being a grandmother is probably as close as I will come to being a celebrity. Hope all is going well with each of you -
