Cheryl's Story

Life Graduated in 1980 from University of Ga with B.S. in Computer Science. (Go Dawgs!!! I have had 47 yardline season tickets for the last 25 years! Sarah loves the Bulldogs, too!) Worked in the computer programming field for over 24 years. Last employed as a Business Systems Analyst at Southern Company in Atlanta on the CSS (Customer System Support) Billing team. Worked at Sarah's school, Greenfield Hebrew Academy, in accounts payable and technical support for two years. Now working for the U.S. District Court jury office downtown where I help maintain and qualify jurists for federal trials. Married Evan Katz in 1993 and have one daughter, Sarah Rebekah, born in 1995. She is in seventh grade at Greenfield Hebrew Academy (Middle School now!). She has been in the gifted math program and was a member of the GHA Performing Arts Players. The Players perform at the school's biggest fundraiser, the Dinner of Honor, and then they have a week of performances in the spring. She is a member of Dance Troupe at The Dance Centre where she just began her 11th year of dance. She takes ballet, Pointe, lyrical, musical theater, tap, hip-hop and jazz as well as Dance Troupe rehearsals where they prepare for performances and competition. They performed at Walt Disney World in Orlanda, Florida on New Year's Day 01/01/2009. She participated in the IDC Dance competition in March 2009 where her team won gold in jazz and musical theatre. Sarah represented Atlanta at the Jewish Community Center's Maccabi games in San Francisco in August 2009. She won a gold medal for her tap solo and a bronze for her jazz solo. So I'm a driver for my daughter most of the time. She had her Bat Mitzvah ceremony at Congregation Beth Tefillah in October 2007. Member of Beth Tefillah synagogue where I am on Sisterhood Board of Directors, a Life Member of Hadassah, and member of Anti-Defamation League. I love to travel, having been to Europe, Russia, Mexico, and Israel. Met my husband while we were both living in Tzfat, Israel in 1989 and attending the Livnot/U'Lihabanot (To Build and Be Built) program. My husband is a psycho-therapist, having worked for lawyers assessing their clients and counseling people in general. He is from Phoenix and we lived there after we got married until moving to Atlanta in 1999. Keep hoping we can get a Ravenwood multi-year reunion going for some time in the futu...Expand for more
re. Please email if interested. School Attended Pelham Elementary School from 1964 - 1970 (1st thru 6th grades). Then transferred to Ravenwood Academy in Meigs, Ga. and attended from 1970 - 1976 (7th thru 12th). Ravenwood was an amazing place...where parents came together to build a school for their children..and kids from different counties came together to build new friendships. The small classes meant you knew all kids, Kindergarten thru 12th! (My daughter is getting that same experience at her private Jewish day school.) Those first years at Ravenwood were the years of great football and basketball teams..and I loved being a cheerleader for it all. After graduation, headed to the University of Georgia. College Headed to the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. in the fall of 1976. Coming from a small town of Pelham and a small school, UGA was at first overwhelming...imagine going from a class of 36 classmates to a Chemistry class of over 300! But I loved my years at UGA and rooting for the Dawgs. I majored in Computer Science (back before they had PCs and XP and Windows) and have used my knowledge and skills in the computer analyst field since my graduation in 1980. I still have season football tickets (on the 45 yardline, row 13!). UGA was a great learning experience for me as it exposed me to a new world and diversity among people. Workplace First job at Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1980-1983 as a Computer Engineer. Moved to Atlanta in May 1983 to work for Energy Management Associates as a computer programmer analyst and was promoted to a Senior Programmer Analyst while employed there from 1983 through 1989. I then took a year's leave of absence and lived in Israel for 6 months. I began work as a Systems Analyst for Southern Company Services from 1990 until 1993, when I got married and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. I worked at Smitty's in Phoenix as a Systems Analyst from 1993 until my daughter was born in October 1995. I then took off a year to take care of Sarah. I returned to work in 1996 as a Project Manager for American Express in Phoenix and remained there until February 1999 when may family and I moved to Atlanta. I returned to Southern Company Services in March 1999 as a Sr. Business Systems Analyst and remained there until October 2003. Took some time off and began work at Sarah's school in August 2006.
