Cheryl's Story

Life When I left high school I attended JJC for a while and then transferred to the University of Iowa. While at Iowa I coached swimming and diving and was a cheerleader for the Hawkeyes! I lived in the Pi Beta Phi Sorority house off campus and was majoring in P.E. I then transferred to Brigham Young University in Utah where I completed a B.A. English. In 2002 I completed an M.A English in Early British Literature. I worked at Salt Lake Community College as Adjunct Professor of Humanities and I am now working for Utah Valley University as a Concurrent College Writing teacher and teaching AP English Language and Composition, and British Literature at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah (outside of Salt Lake City for 11 years now). It is a growing community and we currently have 2000 students with many students from California. I love working with students. (I previously taught at Brigham Young University as a grad student teaching First year Comp. courses). Most of my students are Seniors and I have several sections of Juniors. My children are all grown--two of them married. Christopher graduated from the University of Utah worked as an attorney for Orrin Hatch on the Senate Judiciary Committee and did a clerkship with Judge Bench in Salt Lake City and married Jennifer Garn whose father is the former senator from Utah and a former astronaut (they h...Expand for more
ave one child). Sean, my other son and next oldest (who is single) graduated in Economics from the University of Utah and is working for Fidelity Investments--he plans on going to get an MBA soon. My youngest, a daughter Courtney is at George Washington University studying Laboratory Medicine along with her husband Mark. They have 2 children and are in the Navy. They live in the D.C. area. Between teaching and kids I have been very busy. I have raised my children on my own for the past 25 years which has been challenging, but they are great kids and I am grateful. I am doing some remodeling on my house and the kids have all chipped in to help paint. It has been fun. During the school year I don't do much traveling but in the summer I do. I plan on doing a fellowship (not this summer) but next summer at the Folger Shakespeare Library in D.C. where I can visit my daughter and her family. I enjoy D.C. but love San Diego where Courtney used to live. We love going to Coronado and DelMar! The beaches are fabulous there and it's so much fun! I don't know what else to tell you about my life except it is insanely busy right now. I am involved in extracurricular activities which also keep me at school long hours. (I am helping judge a debate tournament on Friday) which is typical of most teachers. I would love to hear from old friends, so let me hear from you!
