Chip's Story

I'd tell my story, but people that knew me probably won't believe it. Anyway, here goes. After graduating NFA, I joined the Army National Guard. After basic training, I became a medic and then moved back to Norwich where I worked at Benny's while going to Mohegan Community College. While at Mohegan, I became a science geek. I got my Associates degree and then transferred to Eastern CT State where I became a super geek. I became interested in molecular and microbiology and graduated with high honors. Toward the end of my days at Eastern, I learned that schools actually pay students to go to graduate school. Seemed like a good gig to me, so I applied and got accepted. Not too shabby I thought! For the next 5 years I studied the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication and DNA repair. I eventually got my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics, and then took a job with the CT Dept of Public Health developing and implementing molecular diagnostic systems. I was originally hired to set up a system to detect and monitor the spread of the West Nile virus, but eventually worked on projects for bio-threat detection. I even participated in the investigation that detected the anthrax in the CT mail system. After a couple of years, I moved on from the CT Department of Public Health. I took a little time off for R&R, worked for the government of the US Virgin Islands, but that was really just an excuse to SCUBA dive in the Caribbean. From there, I took a temp position with the Centers for Disease Control which took me...Expand for more
to Seattle for a year (SCUBA diving there is unbelievable by the way) and eventually to the SF Bay area (won't dive here . . too many great whites . . the sharks not the band). After 4 years of working for the government, I took a job with Bio-Rad to enter the business side of science. I realized that my combo of science and business was hugely marketable and decided to pursue that instead of a research career. I spent two years with technical support, and one year founding Bio-Rad's Inside Sales team, and then jumped to outside sales positions with a small company called ISC Bioexpress and now, Agilent Technologies where I still work today. I'm still not quite sure what I am going to be when I grow up. :) And now the fun part. . . I'm a bit of a geek nowadays. Though my childish side is still alive and well, I love history, archaeology, philosophy, and reading. Love all things Steinbeck, and anything having to do with the Boston Red Sox. Love my wife, my family and my life in general. Love playing with my nieces and my nephews, and believe it or not, I've become a bit of a writer in my old age. I've written a couple of poems and short stores that I've become proud of, and I am even working on a novel or two. I guess all in all, I've become the well rounded person that Mrs. Morosky and Mr. Blackstone would've never thought possible. I guess I've come a long way from having a mullet cut and spiked hair while wearing parachute pants and California Raisins shirts. It baffles me how much we can change. Ahh the memories!
