Chris's Story
Life
First, I am at csambarnett at gmail dot com. Second, my family and I live in Cranston, R.I. Susanna and I have two daughters - an 8th-grader and a 4th-grader. My 13-year-old is a bright bookworm and the 9-year-old is the life of the party. As those of you who remember me might guess, my career has been split between journalism and PR. Today I work at the State House as Commuications Director for the Secretary of State. We do election reform, lobbying reform and economic development. College took me to Rhode Island, where I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with SHS classmates Paul Matthews, Sandy Johnson, Meg Legros, Laura Olsen and Neil Phenes. Work took me all over the country for the next few years. I finally settled in Rhode Island for good in 1982. . High was razed to make way for a luxury highrise. Friendlys, the Student Shop, Greenberg's, Grand Central and so much more are things of the past. At least Dairy Queen still serves frozen drinks -- only they are called Arctic Rushes now instead of Mr. Misty's. In addition to work and fatherhood, I have filled the years with sports and volunteer work. I still play pick-up basketball, but I am certainly a dino. Not too long ago a bunch of guys were choosing up sides when I heard someone ask, "Who got the white-haired dude?" I looked around for someone with gray hair. It took me a few seconds before I realized that the "white-haired dude" was me! Uhgg! I also like helping out on a variety of nonprofits and causes. Currently, I am on the Board of The Economic Progress Institute, which works on public policy related to economic equity for low- and moderate-income people. And I chair an endowment at the University of Rhode Island to encourage community service. We award scholarships, sponsor special events and fund mentoring programs among other assistance. Uh, oh. I would love to write more, but my 9-year-old wants a bedtime snack -- now!
