Greetings BHS Classmates!
I live in Simsbury, CT, with my wife Bev. We raised our kids, Jack and Lee, here and it has been home for a long time.
I teach history at Avon Old Farms. It's a boarding school for boys, grades 9-12. I also coach cross-country and wrestling. It's a wonderful job: demanding, challenging, and tiring, but terrific fun. The work keeps me stimulated and the coaching keeps me in shape. Being surrounded by young people all day helps me stay young.
Our kids are grown and out. Jack earned a Ph.D. in history at Oxford and is living in London. Lee sells commercial real estate sales in NYC.
Bev continues her work as a doctor. Since COVID, she has definitely earned the title of family hero! She worked through the pandemic both at a busy inner-city ER and in private practice. What stamina and courage!
I enjoy writing and publish two or three commentary pieces and academic essays a year--about education, history, and adolescent culture. My work has been in the Los Angeles Times, Hartford Courant, E...Expand for more
ducation Week, CT Mirror, and various journals. It's fun and keeps me thinking and reading.
The pandemic, kids leaving the nest, our crazy politics of the last 5 years, and living into my 60s have hopefully brought me--and us as a generation--some wisdom. Overall, I feel really lucky. I've had a great education. married a terrific woman, am proud of my quirky kids, and have a fulfilling and challenging job. My health is good.
I've also grown more appreciative of the place and time of our high-school years. Our generation had more freedom by far than the students I teach today. We came of age in a beautiful part of the world, which--I think--has since lost something due to development and sprawl. I'm not nostalgic--our generation had lots of hang-ups, problems, and prejudices. Still, I'm convinced it was easier to know and be true to yourself when we were young.
The only member of our class I keep in touch with is Doug Fargiano. If you read this and would like to get in touch, you can contact me at Avon Old Farms. Rock on!
