Chris's Story
After graduation went to Hofstra for a few years only to find Hofstra and I were not to be. I worked for a while in the boat yards in Freeport until I transferred to the State University at Oswego and studied to be a Technology teacher. For those who knew me in high school, the last profession they would have picked for me was teaching but life is funny that way. After graduating in 1974, I took a job teaching in Great neck and remained there until retiring in 2011. Not having any children of my own, it was fun passing on some of my knowledge and enthusiasm to another generation....or two!!! When you start hearing "my grandmother had you as a teacher" you know it is time to get out of Dodge!!!
I meet my wife, Donna, in the early 70's and we have been married since 1976. Although I still have roots in Merrick through ownership of my old house, we live in Northport. Northport is a small village on the north shore of Long Island with a New England seaport vibe to it. From a quaint main street complete with the original trolley tracks still there, to a park by the harbor with a band shell to an Off Broadway theater that puts on excellent plays and shows. A summer morning could start with a walk down to the harbor, get some breakfast and bring it to the park and watch the fishing boats leave for the day. No plans to head south anytime soon. It would be nice to have more time to drive the toys but I love the seasonal changes and deal with the winter as part of the package.

commuting 50 miles back and forth (that is a slow 50 miles), it is nice to not have to be anywhere. I still do some sub work when former department members are absent but love the fact that I can also just say no. Retirement takes a period of adjustment and after almost 3 years, I think I have it down. Between working around the house, playing in the garage with the toys, enjoying our town and hanging with friends, life is good.
We live in a small 2 bedroom house that everyone our age would probably like to downsize to. The original plans for the house were designed by Armstrong Floors after WW II for returning Vets to have their new homes built. A while back I built my dream garage complete with heat, a/c, cable TV, telephone and indoor plumbing. People kid me that I could live out there but luckily I have never screwed up so bad that I was required to do that.
Kids never seemed to fit into the picture but dogs came along to increase the family. I enjoy working on cars, taking road trips, going to the theater, working around the house, building furniture, reading a good history book, walking the hills of Northport and just relaxing.
Haven't heard from many people from Calhoun but that is understandable as I was not involved much back then and was out the door at the bell unless I had detention or extra help. It is hard to believe that the 50th anniversary of our class is so close at hand...sometimes I think of how many of my friends are no longer here and feel thankful for all I have.
