Chris's Story

Just Living the Dream! Married to my soulmate Kameron. Have an awesome baby boy - Little C. Just built and moved into my new home in downtown Chicago. 3 blocks away from my company - The National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSAsports.org) Here is a Feature interview conducted by The Entrepreneur Network I belong to. EO Member Spotlight Interview with Chris Krause Please tell us briefly about your company: National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) matches college coaches with qualified student-athletes through education and technology. We are the monster.com, meets myspace, meets match for high school student-athletes to get recruited. What do you like best about your business? Changing lives and empowering student-athletes to achieve their dreams through athletics. Why did you join EO & how long have you been a member? I joined EO for continuing education for me as a CEO. I want to be able to keep up with any fresh, cutting edge ideas that will help NCSA meet its 2012 vision of becoming the provider of recruiting education & technology for collegiate athletics. I have been involved with EO for 3 ½ years now. How did you come up with the idea for your business? I went through the process as a student-athlete, and didn¿t have much help, and realized there were a lot of other student-athletes on my team who were good enough to play in college, but did not have the right exposure and guidance to make the connection. Out of college I started to work with a company and owned a franchise in the recruiting service business, and learned how technology could revolutionize the scouting industry. What has been the biggest surprise from your business? The biggest surprise has been the rapid growth and the accelerated goal achievement through mapping out a vision 7 years ago, and holding me and our employees accountable for it. In 2002 I put out a 2012 vision, and by hard work and focus we have been able to stay on track to reach all our goals every year since. How do you manage to stay ahead of your competition? By recruiting great people with character onto the NCSA team, investing in those people and technology, and creating a world class culture that believes in the process and are empowered by our achievements as a team. What frustrates you about your business? Bureaucracy of growth, and not enough hours in the day. How many hours do you personally work each week? 50-60 How much money did you have to invest to start your business? About $4,500. What are your current annual revenues and number of employees? Over 10 million in revenue, with over 100 employees. What is your proudest accomplishment to date in your business? My proudest moment to date in business is having over 10,000 student-athletes in college and surpassing the 10 million revenue mark, which puts us in a class of less than one half of 1% of all businesses. When did you fi...Expand for more
rst realize you were going to be an entrepreneur? During internships with two entrepreneurs that became my mentors. Did you ever previously own or operate a business? Yes, I owned and operated a franchise for 7 years. What is something you learned in your forum that you have applied to your business? How color in the office can raise the energy and fun level, and how to make NCSA¿s website highly functional and award winning through the positive feedback of the forum. What is your most proud accomplishment in your entire life? Being a father to my 5 month old son, Christopher. What are your biggest personal strengths? Passion and vision, and knowing where I¿m going. What about your biggest weakness? Impatience What do you feel is your best personal quality? Leadership Why do you think you have been successful? Hard work, strong character, and always trying to do the right thing but being accountable if I don¿t. What do you enjoy doing when you are not working like crazy? Surfing! What is something that most people don't know about you? My love of music- I played the saxophone in grade school and I am currently learning to play the guitar. What is something you hope will be written about you in your obituary? That I helped inspire a generation of student-athletes to achieve their dreams and get the most out of life using the principles they learned through athletics, such as hard work, fair play, respect for your opponent, integrity, time management, being part of a team, and being coachable. What are your biggest pet peeves? Laziness and complacency Got anything big coming up on the horizon for you personally or with business that you want to share? I¿m working on a book titled Student-Athletes Wanted. It¿s about college recruiting and the important lessons athletics can teach a young person. Who has had the biggest influence on your life? Parents, grandparents, and coaches. What are the most influential books that you have read? Victoria Falls in Zambia, Africa If you could spend an entire day with one person who would it be? Kameron, my wife. If you could give some wise advice on how to get the most out of your EO membership, what would it be? Focus on the journey, not the events. Be honest and share your experiences, and you will get more in return than you can imagine. In the spirit of ¿leveraging the network,¿ what is your #1 business challenge that you are facing right now and would appreciate insight from the membership? How to manage growth and culture.
