Chris's Story
Life
You can AIM "cjtopa69" or email "cjtopa" at "sbcglobal" dot "net" so we can get in touch. After about 3 years discerning my vocation, while spending time visiting a monastery, my perspective on life has changed. I owe a great deal to the kindness, direction and friendship the members of the community have continued to provide me. Without them, I would probably still be wandering aimlessly through life. Life itself has provided some hard lessons. I sufferred through some health problems, surgery and some losses, as my sister-in-law, both of my high school prom dates and several friends have past away. I can now say the dumbest thing I've done is allow fear and selfishness rule my life. I spent too much time not caring enough or concerned enough about my family, friends and acquaintances through the years. I'm sorry if you are one of those I have hurt or not talked to recently. My life is now, well, a little more decided. After struggling through my early college years, I finished my BSPA in 1992, MBA in 2000, my MPA in 2002, my JD in 2006 and I am currently working on my LLM and PhD. I'm now living the happily married life and trying to enjoy it to the fullest. We have a new addition to our family. On Tax Day, appropriately enough, we added a beautiful little girl. I'm no longer doing the dangerous things (rock climbing in the Rockies and bungie jumping off a bridge in California) and, I'm still doing some wonderfully moving things: climbed several different mountains, spend time in silent contemplation at a monastery, watched the sun rise over the Gulf and set over the Pacific. I left the property management firm and Bloomington in 2003 and moved to Michigan. I still help run a small computer firm suppling hardware and software to not-for-profits and churches. I also helped to found a Community Coalition in Washtenaw County helping the IRS Volunteer Return Preparat...Expand for more
ion Program and currently working on starting a Low Income Tax Clinic. I recently stepped down as Chair of the Law Student Section of the State Bar of Michigan after 3 years on the council. I passed the Bar Exam and gained admission to the Bar in November 2006. I'm currently in the process of interviewing other lawyers who want to join our firm. I'm no longer worrying about getting older and my hair is still migrating to warmer regions (like my ears, yuk!). All in all, things are well, a bit hectic, but well. I'm still not used to pointing at my right hand to explain where I live (only Michiganders and those who love them will understand), I get up each day and thank God I'm still alive, in good health, have a wonderful wife and surrounded by loving friends and family.
School
Hard to say who was the most influential teacher, I really don't have any who I disliked along the way. A few I disappointed over the years, but they all gave me something valuable that I still cherish, a love of learning that continues both in my current schooling and my personal life. Would I do it ALL over again? I'd love to avoid the mistakes I made, but I suppose they are what make me what I am today. Both good and bad, I've learned and I've grown. I certainly wouldn't trade all the great people I've met through school. I'd probably treat them better knowing now what I didn't realize then.
College
I can say my undergraduate years were quite amazing. I was very lucky to have the roommates, hallmates and friends I met. Indiana University is still my alma mater. I love the campus and the great times spent there. I have a great affection for my MBA "red dots" study group. Law School really tried me, but "Thank God!" for the great faculty, staff and students at Ave. I'm still getting acclimated to the academic environment at Wayne, it's definitely a hidden gem in the grime of downtown Detroit.
