Christina's Story

...more updates, May 2017: Lucky me! Daughter #1 and her husband have provided me with three adorable grandchildren; two granddaughters, aged five and almost three, and their sweet little brother, eight months old. Being a grandparent is a wonderful state of affairs, as I'm sure many of you already know. I am retired and spend lots of happy time with the wee ones. Daughter #2 is still living (and now working) in Vancouver and is involved in creating beautiful venues and decor for weddings, events and whatever else comes along. She and her beau, who live in a lovely neighbourhood west of downtown, met on a city bus about three years ago because of an extraordinary pair of snowshoes. It's the kind of story movies are made from. Me? As I mentioned, I am retired (almost three years) and have been so busy with grandchildren that I've not had time to pursue anything else...but...my gentleman friend (not yet retired) and I are still opera enthusiasts and are trying to mend our very old house with a new front porch, re-design the back yard and generally spruce the place up. We've decided we'll live here forever, or for as long as we can. No condo for us! :-) ...and here's another update on things in my life... My younger daughter just finished up at Queen's, major - German Language and Literature, minor - Religious Studies...graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her next adventure is studying photography, probably in Vancouver in September. I will miss her, but this is the time in one's life when these grand leaps are possible and should certainly be undertaken. When else?? On a more serious note, my 17-year-old (step)grandson is battling cancer. He's in his fifth phase of treatment and is facing each day with strength and courage. There is some improvement, but it's still a long road to travel. We are all cheering for him. My elder daughter, after teaching in ESL for a couple of years, has just graduated from 'regular' teachers college; the younger one is doing a summer semester in Germany...and the happiest news of all...several months ago my lovely stepdaughter made it through surgery to remove a brain tumor and is doing very well indeed. Her neurologist is confident of a complete recovery and her husband and children are so, so grateful. On a different note, recently I was promoted in my job and am enjoying the chance to learn some new tricks and keep my brain finely tuned because I plan to be around for a long, long time. My life has been fun and interesting so far. After SCS I went to Toronto to study Journalism and worked for several newspapers, mostly in the GTA. Got to write some good storie...Expand for more
s, interview some amazing characters and work with some truly fine people. I've done a fair bit of travelling, the most memorable trip being a six-month hitch hiking adventure in the UK, Europe, Greek Islands and Morocco with my younger brother. We celebrated Christmas that year in Italy, with Lew and Isobel (Calhoun) Pratt, who generously put us up for an entire week. We spent hours the day before Christmas trying to find a suitable gift for them. Do you know how difficult it was to find a bottle of Glen Grant Scotch in Rome in 1974? But, find it we did and we had a wonderful dinner with our former teachers. A week later on New Year's Day we caught a boat to Greece. There was a storm in the Mediterranean and the name of our boat was The Poseidon. During the 60's and 70's I went to a lot of concerts, both in halls and outdoor stadiums, and saw many of the great bands. It was such a free and fun time. I'm not sure our kids have experienced the same kind of cultural revolution...but, of course, they have cell phones and i-Pods, so their hearing will be just as compromised! I've been divorced longer than I was married (seems to be rampant in our generation), I have two remarkable daughters, one terrific son-in-law, two wonderful step-children and a handful of lovely step-grandchildren. While I'm not re-married I do have a 'gentleman companion' with whom I cook Sunday dinners, attend the opera season in Toronto, dabble in home improvements and generally hang out. For the past six months I've had a personal trainer who is helping me stay healthy and fit. I want to be around a long time to see my children's children's children (you could write a song about that) enjoy their lives. Life hasn't, however, been perfect. My nephew (my sister's firstborn), drowned accidentally at the age of 23 and a very dear friend (and former lover) from my journalism days, took his own life just a few years ago. My dear, honest and hard-working parents are both gone and my eldest brother died from a long-term illness at the age of 60...and life goes on. Not yet retired and no longer in Journalism, I enjoy my work as a Buyer in academia and will probably stay at it for a few more years. If I were to live my life again, I wouldn't change a lot...perhaps choose a husband more wisely, have more children, and most importantly, realise while still in High School that one's social status during those years really has very little to do with one's worth as a person. I believe I imparted that to my children. My retirement projects include learning to play piano, writing, becoming a 'doula' and travelling. Oh, and I'd like to run a marathon!
