Christine's Story

After Manual I went to CU and got a B.S. in Journalism. In the summer of 82 an unexpected opportunity came to me in the form of a job in the Washington, D.C. office of U.S. Rep. Ken Kramer. Even though he was a Republican and I was a Democrat I snapped it up. I had never even visited there so it was a huge, scary move but a great one! I was a legislative aide and asst. press secretary and stayed in D.C. for nearly five years. While I loved the action and culture of the East Coast, I got homesick, was tired of politics, and moved back to Denver in 1986 thinking I could easily get a job in another field. Unfortunately that was when the Colorado economy was in the skids and I had a rough time getting a job. I worked for the Colorado Statesman, a political newspaper, and on some political campaigns. Serendipitously, while working on the campaign for Don Bain for Mayor, I met my future husband, also a Democrat who was doing an internship for graduate school. He got a job in Boca Raton, Florida, not long after we met and, after two angst-filled years, convinced me to leave Denver and move with him. I swore I would never move for someone else, especially to a place I didn't like that much, but sometimes you have to take chances! It worked, we got married--and still are 18 ye...Expand for more
ars later! I started a new career in book publishing and was the editorial director of Health Communications, the publisher of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, for ten years. A few years after my kids were born (Nick is now 10 and Anna almost 8) I felt like I was missing out on too much of their childhood experiences and quit my job to raise them. It was the best decision I ever made. I do freelance editing and proofreading while they are at school, and am trying to get some children's books I have written published. We live in Boca Raton, FL, on the SE coast between Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. This is Palm Beach county, land of the infamous "hanging chads" of the 2000 election. It's filled with ex-New Yorkers so you don't at all feel like you are in the South. It's also hurricane alley, which I can tell you from experience, is not fun to go through! I love the ocean and am thrilled that I haven't shoveled snow for nearly two decades, but I still miss Denver and especially my family. I must admit I am shocked by how much the city has grown and changed and I hardly recognize my old neighborhood, where nearly every house has been torn down and replaced by a McMansion! Ugh, progress. Maybe someday I'll move back but I will probably have to win the lottery first!
